Australia to bring back Knighthoods ! FFS

Post by Earnest » April 18, 2014, 5:38 pm

Of course, damehoods and knighthoods are unashamedly elitist and even an English icon such as myself sometimes wonders how certain characters in the UK secure their titles. Is it an invitation to corrupt society? Here's a republican stance I found a good read.

Abbott drags us back in time to a knights' realm

The return of imperial honours defies the spirit of the nation we have become.

http://www.theage.com.au/comment/abbott ... 35inb.html
Late last year, when Abbott was asked if he intended to follow New Zealand's conservative government, which restored dames and knights in 2009, he implied he would not.

''I don't mind having knights and dames around,'' he said. ''We've thankfully still got a few.'' So now it's two more, with more to come: four a year.

''I want to enhance the dignity of the existing system,'' Abbott says. It's worth recalling that when New Zealand's former prime minister abolished dames and knights, she was accused of ''republicanism by stealth''.

Is our Prime Minister therefore guilty of subtle monarchism?

Drones on Society, knighthoods bestowed to the few. we don't want them I can assure you Earnest. Costing Millions of Tax Payers good earned money to have them in Australia, Money better spent on the needy.

I see your point, you have to ask what the function (or requirement) is to affix such titles to certain names...for what services to the nation? What's more, are you aware of this, Khun Up 'n' under?
What disturbs me is that the exclusivity of the dames and knights tier appears to bypass conventional selection procedures. Instead of recipients being determined by the Order of Australia Council, they will be decided by the Prime Minister, although he will consult the council chairman. Why? Are these new awards so special, so eminent or pre-eminent, they have to be bestowed not by the proper designated body but at the behest of the court of individual Tony?

Paul Collingwood got an MBE , for scoring 7 runs , in an winning ashes series,

Say no more

Abbott is a staunch monarchist, resurrected an old pict of Betty Windsor from the Parliament House museum, in the first hours of occupancy as PM.

Interesting that a poll taken earlier this week has Labour in front, one of the questions polled was bring back the knighthoods etc

He will be remembered by many as a failed co*k in a frock / priest , not so much a paedophile, but definitely an anglophile.

Whats the difference between Vegemite and Abbott, Vegemite has a shelve life of greater than 3 years.

That's a bad thing if your Labour Party is as ineffectual as ours. [-(

An Anglophile you say? The sexual abuse of honest to goodness Brits must be condemned.

very strange they are held in such high esteem for some reason as they havent achieved anything special to be so adored
Usually we can do this bowing and scraping to royalty better than the Aussies. But now you guys have the mad monk running Australia, I'm not so sure. I think Mick Dundee might be a better PM.

Sydney Morning Herald headline:

Prince George wows Sydney as picture-perfect royals visit the zoo

Excuse me why I have a big puke. The headline is hopefully misleading but it suggests many Sydney people are as much in love with their UK royal betters as Tony Abbott.

A cup of tea anyone? Earnest will be preparing and serving the tea.

Hang on, old bean, while I dig out my British Airways vomit bag.

Isn't great to see the Windsors' Australian subjects waving the union flag while young Prince George surveys his future empire? Makes you proud to be British. :-"

Another cup of Tetleys, GT?

Yes, it warms one's heart to see our beloved royals welcomed in such a grand manner in the other white Dominions of the Empire. Thank you New Zealand and Australia. Nice flags you chaps have. You fly them proudly.

It will be nice to renew our acquaintance with Charles and Camilla in the summer. Canada, of course, is the First Dominion.

Think the Kiwis are going to ? Remove the Union Jack off their flag. While we suffer from having a mad monk as an anglophile. Just lucky he doesnt followcricket. Like other anglophile PMs such as Menzies and Howard.

They would be silly to do that. Canada changed their flag in 1965 from the Red Ensign to the Maple Leaf flag. However, officially Canada now has two national flags - the Maple Leaf and the Union Flag. We also have two official national anthems - 'God Save The Queen', and 'Oh Canada'. 'The Maple Leaf Forever' used to be an unofficial anthem, but since it was about our great British heritage and Wolfe defeating the French, political correctness has sent that great song packing.

These are Canada's National Anthems,

Canada has a great flag. One of the best around.

I must say I enjoy this thread. It provides a good opportunity to tease Australians about their current PM wanting to take Australia back in time through the Howard years into the Menzies decades. What's he going to do next? Abandon the dollar and convert back to the Australian pound last used in 1966?

I see it as marching forward hand-in-hand with her glorious past. Australia and New Zealand have great and very distinctive flags.

Are you staying up late studying, or are you still excited over the great haul of Easter eggs and chocolate chickens that you accumulated this Easter?

No Easter for me, the b@stards sent yours truly to the US for Easter Sunday, just got back yesterday.

OMG! Check out the knighthood poll on the Mudgee Guardian (and Gulgong Advertiser)! It seems the Australians are split 2/1.
