Books about the Tiananmen Square Massacre, protests in Honk Kong and other 'so-called' sensitive subjects have been removed from libraries in Hong Kong. However these titles should still be available in book stores. Prospects seem dim for Hong Kongers to commemorate the Massacre this June 4th.

Not surprisingly Hong Kong's commemoration of the Tiananmen Square Massacre was rather muted today. However, places like Vancouver, British Columbia, and Toronto, Ontario will have to pick up the torch.

All of this is true, Doodoo, but what does it have to do with the loss of freedom in Hong Kong? I would be happy to contribute to any thread you compose about these other topics. We could look at the Great Leap Forward and the Great Proletarian Revolution under Mao, the Great Famine in the Ukraine under Stalin as well as numerous other tragedies.

You have a reading comprehension problem, Whistler. I never told Doodoo anything of the sort, in fact, I agreed with him. My suggestion was that he start a thread on those topics he raised, and I would be happy to contribute. The large conical hat belongs on your noggin, not Doodoo's head.

Agree with some qualifications. China agreed at the time of the handover to preserve many of the freedoms in HK, now that promise is shredded. this is happening today, whereas some of the other atrocities mentioned are so old they are pushing up daisies.

Unfortunately, I could not take on the world here, Doodoo. Perhaps if the thread title was more along the lines of the World and Freedom, I could have, and would have, included some other examples. But the thread title says it all; therefore, I tried to limit my discussion to the apparent loss of freedom in Hong Kong, in particular, since 2020, which of course is going to be a one-sided portrayal. However, you go right ahead and include other topics if you so wish.

We could begin by noting that although residential schools no longer exist in Canada, the way Cree and Ojibwa children and teenagers from isolated reserves in Northern Ontario are treated by the police in Thunder Bay is abysmal.

It seems that next on the agenda is to ban the Hong Kong freedom anthem, 'Glory to Hong Kong'. After one listens to the English lyrics the question arises, why did didn't the Hong Kong authorities not ban it before? What has taken them so long?

The Government of Hong Kong has placed a bounty on 8 activists who now live in the U.K., Australia and the U.S.A.

'Hong Kong police have offered bounties of £100,000 for information leading to the capture of eight pro-democracy activists based overseas, including three in Britain, as they announced new arrest warrants under the territory’s draconian national security law.

It is the first time Hong Kong officials have issued warrants for activists who fled into exile to avoid arrest on charges of “collusion with foreign forces” against the pro-Beijing government.

The national security law, which was introduced amid a violent crackdown on dissent three years ago, claimed extra-territorial jurisdiction over anyone in the world who broke its articles. The law gave officials wide-ranging powers against pro-democracy activists, framing the mildest acts of dissent as subversion, secession and terrorism.


Many western countries swiftly suspended extradition treaties with Hong Kong to prevent it seeking the return of activists living in self-imposed exile.

James Cleverly, the foreign secretary, said: “We will not tolerate any attempts by China to intimidate and silence individuals in the UK and overseas.” The US State Department also condemned the extra-territorial application of the law.'
