Jackspratt, I can't speak to your scenario because I don't think either of us knows if the National Guard in this case was acting with or without legal authority.

According to the terms of the curfew order (from what I have read in several sources), they (national Guard) weren't acting with legal authority.

People were entitled to be within their own properties, and still complying with the curfew.

But that is not my point. It is more about the madness of allowing Joe-Bob and Mary-Lou to be allowed to possess semi-automatic weapons, ostensibly to use against the overwhelming power of the state.

Except when the state (as in this case) is acting illegally, apparently.

Here's a thought about the riots , how come when the people of Hong Kong rioted over rights ,burning police stations, smashing shops ,people being beaten up by mobs in the streets . It's seemed a good thing as far as the west was concerned ,even to the point of western government praising the protesters for fighting for their rights. Even at the hight the Chinese never sent in the army. But when it happens in the west protesters are thugs ? Hypocrisy at its best

I beg to differ, we had Race Riots , not nice and often the locals are revolting about something or another , but generally most protests are not set fire to the town affairs conducted by people bussed in to do just that . As one sane in Telligent American said, the locals would NOT set fire to their own shops that serve them.
It is just like the Ban the Bomb brigade and other events, people hitch hike on the back of the protest to suit their own agenda which generally has nothing to do with the original problem, but to be seen at these events is a personal ego boosting scenario . Sadly looking at many Americans and the love or hate for POTUS you can understand the problems now. ignorance coupled with even more ignorance

Knife and machete wielding junkies aren't old ladies. British police as you well know aren't armed and still manage to apprehend them even if it means using a Taser.

Typically day to day British police stop cars have a little chat, issue your FPN and off you go without anyone getting shot.
