National and state taxes add to the cost of US gasoline. For the first quarter of 2008, the average state gasoline tax is 28.6 cents per US gallon, plus 18.4 cents per US gallon federal tax making the total 47 cents per US gallon.

Politicians have no intention of helping citizens burdened with the high cost of gasoline by eliminating these taxes. Politicians and socialists believe that everything must be taxed.

If you don't tax gasoline, how does the "state" pay for the construction and maintenance of the very expensive road system?

Jack I agree with you but sadly most of the money never makes it there. example N.Y snow removal
is paid for out of the fuel tax now you say that OK but the snow removal is only done in the prime and wealthy areas most of Brooklyn & Queens does not see a snow removal truck it spent in N.Y.C around wall street and Gracie Mansion Home of the Mayor and other important areas like times square
