North Korea jails US journalists

A court in North Korea has sentenced two US journalists to 12 years' hard labour, state media say.

Euna Lee and Laura Ling were found guilty of "hostile acts" and illegal entry into the communist state.

They were arrested in March after allegedly crossing into North Korea from China.

The US said it was "deeply concerned" by the sentence and called for the release of the two women on humanitarian grounds.

The trial comes amid growing tensions over North Korea's nuclear programme and recent missile tests.

"The trial confirmed the grave crime they [the reporters] committed against the Korean nation and their illegal border crossing," state-run KCNA news agency said in a brief report, adding that they were sentenced to 12 years of "reform through labour".

The news agency gave no further details.

Outside observers were not allowed to witness the hearing at Pyongyang's court.

The verdict means that the journalists face the prospect of spending years in one of the North's prison camps, where conditions are reported to be extremely harsh, the BBC's Chris Hogg in Seoul says.

US envoy?

In a statement, the US State Department said: "We are deeply concerned by the reported sentencing of the two American citizen journalists by North Korean authorities, and we are engaged through all possible channels to secure their release."

US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton earlier described the charges against the two women as "baseless". She is thought to be considering sending an envoy to try to negotiate their release.

There has been speculation that former US Vice-President Al Gore might travel to Pyongyang. He is the co-founder of Current TV, the California-based internet broadcaster the two journalists were working for.

Euna Lee, a Korean-American, and Laura Ling, a Chinese-American, were arrested by North Korean guards on 17 March while working on the China-North Korea border on a story about refugees.

Some reports have suggested that the women were held while on Chinese soil, but Pyongyang's state media say they had illegally entered North Korea.

The pair have been held in detention since their arrest.

There are fears they will now be used as "bargaining chips" by North Korean leader Kim Jong-il in his efforts to win concessions from Washington, our correspondent says.

These concessions could include humanitarian aid or direct talks with Washington, analysts say.

The US has so far said negotiations can only be held under the currently-stalled six-party talks on nuclear disarmament, which also includes South Korea, China, Japan and Russia.

The women's families have appealed for clemency and asked Pyongyang and Washington not to link their case with the current diplomatic stand-off.

Tensions have increased in the region since North Korea conducted a nuclear test in May and then test-fired several missiles. Another long-range missile test is believed to be planned for later this month.

The UN Security Council is discussing tightening sanctions against Pyongyang, and Mrs Clinton said on Sunday that the US was considering reinstating North Korea in its list of state sponsors of terrorism.
Where do we go from here, one wonders? :?

We do not know the facts in this case. However, if the two journalists did transgress North Korean borders, then I have no sympathy with their plight. In the last few weeks there have been a spate of cases where people have broken the laws of a foreign country, and then expect special treatment. You know the rules; adhere to them and you won't have a problem. If the two reporters were framed, however, then that is a differenct scenario altogether. But how do you find out?

it called deportation if you don't like some one in your country deport them don't imprison them
just for the sake of looking tuff as for N/K he is nothing more than dictator who thinks he is in the big leagues he fails to realize that China will not protect them like they did in the Korea war there to much money at stake now. it will only be the people who suffer as usual JMHO

any journalist with half a brain would in my view be fully aware of the dangers they faced illegaly entering N K . so if the report is true that they were in fact in the rebublic , i have no sympathy what so ever for them . i would go so far as to say they are lucky to still be alive . whether they survive the labour camps is another matter . it pretty obvious that kin whatever his name is will use them as a bargaining chip with the americans . to me its totaly irrisponsible that they , the journalists ,should put their country in this position , for what , a good story and 15 minutes of fame ? if the americans do nogotiate their release , then they should put them in jail in the states .

No Ron, you are wrong here. You and I and any reasonable person would agree that deportation and a hefty fine or a short prison sentence would be an appropriate penalty. However if these reporters did as claimed, then they knew the score.

These two women are/were journalists reporting on a story. I would expect, therefore, that they had made 'background checks' before entering China to get near the Korean border. Even a casual check on the internet will quickly reveal the depths that the North Korean Government will stoop to in order to protect what it sees as its secrets or advance its' agenda.
Were the women physically on Korean soil?? Who knows, or will ever know but past events (like the kidnapping of Japanese citizens) suggests that the Korean authorities would not have cared one jot about that - something they should & must have been fully aware of.
These were not 'innocents' (although they maybe innocent of any crime) caught up in an international incident - they are professionals who pushed the boundaries (pun intended) too far....

I have a tendency to lean toward the "kidnapping" side. The reporters were in China doing a story on human trafficking, something the N Koreans are known to do. Crossing a border to take someone captive is also part of their MO.

Given NK track record on honesty, truth and integrity, I would believe other reports long before the NK and the theory the NK wants to use them as bargaining chips.

As much as I would like to see the ladies released, what happened to "not negotiating with terrorist"?

Those policies change from administration to administration.

Since this administration no longer fights a War on Terror (Contingency Operations) and terrorist acts are now officially called man-made disasters, I would think that it's quite possible that the new administration will negotiate with whatever they choose to call a terrorist.
