The Orkney Islands and the SNP

Post by Laan Yaa Mo » July 7, 2023, 2:16 pm

It seems that the Orkney Islands are fed up up with SNP rule, and are exploring alternative options to rule from Edinburgh. As the writer suggests, this is most likely a symptom of widespread dissatisfaction with SNP rule in Scotland.

“We can’t go on as we are,” says James Stockan, leader of Orkney council, complaining that the archipelago is short-changed by the SNP-led Scottish government in Edinburgh. Stockan, a former oatcake tycoon, raised the vague possibility of Orkney becoming a crown dependency, a British overseas territory like the Falkland Islands, or even, most dramatically, swapping the British crown for the Norwegian one. Orkney, he said, should be considered a “stepping stone to the Arctic”.

Entertaining as it may be to watch the SNP grapple with secessionists, there is no realistic possibility of an Orcadian insurrection. Yet the islanders’ protests are not inconsequential. For they are another data point supporting the suspicion that Scotland’s long love affair with the SNP is cooling. If so, this is a development with significant consequences for the whole of the United Kingdom.

Humza Yousaf’s first hundred days as first minister have not been happy ones. The resignation of Nicola Sturgeon was a surprise blow to the solar plexus from which the SNP has not yet recovered. Yousaf was her preferred successor, a gift that helped him acquire the leadership but has since become a poison pill. No charges have yet been brought as a result of the police investigation into the SNP’s financial affairs but Sturgeon’s arrest nevertheless casts a long shadow. If there is a satisfactory explanation for the SNP’s decision to spend more than £100,000 on a luxury camper van, it has not been shared with the public.'
