I did have a quick look to see if their was a chance i could get anything. but the government website is not very helpful. But as a UK citizen, there is no benefit agreement with Australia (every other European country, but not us ...) So unless i was going to live in Australia for 5 years, i can forget it entirely. And they probably wouldn't let me in anyway.

Only other government (other than British) who might owe me a pension is Libya - some how i doubt that will happen!

I was waiting to see if there was any more word on the Aus government adopting the same arrangement as NZ have.

There was some discussion on it a couple of months back.

Nothing so far but one can be hopeful. Think I'll have to chase it up.

Arrangement there is, no matter what you do, what level of asset, you reach OAP age then you get the full pension.
Seems to work very well apparently given there is no need for centrelink intervention, saving them gazillions.

Oz govt just decreased he assets you can have before they effect pensions. Only your home exempt, if you managed to save or invest wisely you are screwed.

The Australian Government (AG) strategy of forced saving throughout ones work life and then making the individual use those savings at a slightly later stage in life (i.e. 67 - 70 years old) a the primary means of supporting him/herself, has been on the cards since the late 1990's to to my knowledge. I think it was then that the AG first started to insist that individuals keep their major Australian Superannuation Funds.

Since then, there have been a raft of changes/adjustments, for the worst to the normal individual, such as those for
Preservation Age.
Contribution Amounts.
Amount of Lumps Sum Benefit available at the end.
When and how the Benefit is to be paid out, after you retire.

Its like an Insurance Company, they know the average age that most of us will die and they are making sure that you don't get back what you or your employer put in over the years, so that they (the AG) have a windfall when we expire at an early or average age. Not to mention the obvious, that Superannuation replaces the Old Age Pension in its entirety, at some point in the future.

This is all for the masses but the Politicians have a separate set of rules with a separate Superannuation Scheme. If you read what they can get when they retire, for their limited time as a Politician, you will be sick. Its a Rort.

Its why they dont have any credibility, and then the Pig in the Trough attitude to expenses and begrudgingly repaying expenses to Politicians Weddings , Choppers, buying on impulse a unit on the Gold Coast etc

Your spot on there Fatone, 25 years in Australia for a full pension, if you leave the country to retire you get nothing else in the way of benefits. All of us who grew up in aussie will get the pension except for the latest slight movement of the goalposts with the 2 years at home when you apply. You can have holidays overseas for 6 weeks at a time during this 2 year period, would suit most.
might have to live in a caravan on the beach for a while.....done that before.
Any way by the time I get to the finish line it will have changed again...the govt of any species ain't going to do us any favours from now on to provide us with a positive result. We can only play the ball delivered on the day. No need to stress prematurely.
I am approaching 63 this year and trying to find out all I can about how much time is allowed overseas during the last 2 years. You mention 6 weeks at a time, is that 6 weeks all you can do for each year? I have to say I hope it is more than 6 weeks per year. The government is very vague in this area.
Such is life.

Gozzo,

I think it was 6 weeks at a time, but not sure how much time between the 6 weeks periods. If you retired you should be able to do as many trips overseas as you like IMO.
If I get a chance I will look. The website has to many links and yes it gets slightly vague and confusing at least for me that is.

Barney,

Thanks for your reply. I just want to know if I can eg, go to Thailand 5 times in 1 year for 30 days each time and still be eligible for the pension. Using a 50/50 rule for time spent in Australia. 5 trips 30 days, being a polite way of not pushing it too far.
Such is life.

self explanatory
How long you need to have been a resident
To get Age Pension you need to have been an Australian resident for at least 10 years in total. For at least 5 of these years, there must be no break in your residence.

Im under the Not Eligible till 67 rule, meaning i must be resident in Oz by the time im 65 to pre qualify,

I cant find out, how many days, weeks or a yearly count of days I could be permitted outside of Australia during the 2 year period. Maybe they use their discretion LOL, as to the number of days you were in country. Check your passport and check the dates of departure / arrival back and then say your not fitting the criteria of a resident.

Im sure at 67 , they will then recalculate the number of days I was outside of Oz in that 2 year period , it will be counted against me.
