Stan.

I have not noticed any difference with TGB's exchange rate when compared with BK Banks

This morning my wife tried to withdrawal money from two different Gov banks but the ATM wouldn't complete the transaction, anyone else experience this problem?

BTW, she tried withdrawing different amounts and the card works because she ended up taking money out from another bank (Kbank).

Figured I take a chance on the above ATM. After feeding it my ATM card and PIN, instead of the typical 150 baht fee warning the exchange rate to be used was shown on the screen...32.68 :yikes: abort, abort, abort.

I used KBank instead and got 33.88.

Thanks Stan. I should have told you that Ngee Soon is marked on the map. Anyway, both Gae and I tried that bank and another and our cards didn't work, oh well.

The rate you got pretty well equates to the closing average of the TT buy/sell rates in Thailand on Friday (Yahoo, BBC & similar “quoted” rates are the average of the buy/sell rates sourced from a number of bank feeds).

The closing TT buy rate in Thailand on Friday was:
  • Kasikorn – 34.180
    Bangkok – 34.180
    SCB – 34.170
The closing average buy/sell rate in Thailand on Friday was:
  • Kasikorn – 34.305
    Bangkok – 34.305
    SCB – 34.320
Based on Friday closing data Kasikorn and Bangkok are currently working on a TT buy/sell spread of 0.25 THB and SCB is slightly worse at 0.30 THB.

Sorry if it has been said already but it appears that UOB (United Overseas) Bank have not introduced the 150Bht charge yet. They plan to introduce a charge of 100 Bht on August 11th next. They only have 2 Atm's listed on their website for Udon: UOB Bank, Udon Thani Phosri Rd, and Tang Ngeesoon Super Store also on Phosri Road.

I have to add I haven't tried it yet but if I'm passing tomorrow I'll stop off and try it unless anybody else has and can verify if it is fact or fiction.

I stopped off at the UOB Bank on Phosri Road today and withdrew money using my Allied Irish Bank ATM card and they DID NOT charge me the 150 Baht fee.

Today I used the The Government Saving Bank ATM on Phosi Road across the street from the Mitsubishi car dealership, which is between the Charoen Hotel and the road to the train station. NO FEE of any kind in Thailand.

There is, however, now a 1% fee in USA for me. This is also something new since sometime in April. Until now there was never any kind of fee for ATM use using my USA card, which has a VISA logo and is tied to my credit union. :?

Has anyone been successful setting up a transfers from a USA bank to the Bangkok Bank in New York City, and they send it to their branch in Thailand? If you have experience in doing this, I would like to know how is is done? Who do I contact first, second, etc.? And what fee(s) are there in doing this?
Thanks

Mainer:

2 years ago I sent an email to Bangkok bank head office in Bkk. About this facility as my money is paid into a UK account and there is a Bangkok bank in London. My enquiry was as you ask if I have my money paid into BB London will it show if I have a BB account in Thailand. The answer was NO we do not have this facility.

Hope this answers your query

well my system is far from the best but I am free of any Thai banks getting my income
and I like it that way. some of you have your pension checks to B/B in New York or London
the problem with that as I see it becomes a nightmare when you want to stop it and move
your income to a more friendly environment. to my knowledge there no Bangkok Banks
in Cambodia or Vietnam or even Malaysia just over the border in Vientiane Lao there is one

Ron, what is the "nightmare" you are talking about in stopping the direct deposit? I have my US Social Security DD'd to BKK bank for a fee of 0.25% and then it costs me nothing to withdraw (as long as I'm in the same province). I have had Direct Deposits with both from my former employer and with Social Security and never had a problem switching banks. Usually the switch is made within a month's time.

As far as the Thai bank "getting your income", some bank is going to "get" it, unless you are putting it under your mattress.

By the way, if your are talking Social Security payments, they will not send those payments to you if you are in Cambodia or Vietnam. Some exceptions can be made in which case you have to appear at the American embassy to pick up your money "if you qualify" and I don't know what it takes to qualify.

The following is taken from the SSA Publication 05-10137:

"Social Security restrictions prohibit sending payments to individuals in Cambodia, Vietnam or areas that were in the former Soviet Union (other than Armenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Russia). Generally, you cannot receive payments while you are in one of these countries, and we cannot send your payments to anyone for you. However, exceptions can be made for certain eligible beneficiaries in countries other than Cuba or North Korea.
To qualify for an exception, you must agree to the conditions of payment. One of the conditions is that you must appear in person at the U.S. Embassy each month to receive your benefits. Contact your nearest U. S. Social Security office or U.S. Embassy or consulate for additional information about these conditions and whether you might qualify for an exception.

If you do not qualify for payment under this procedure and you move from one of these countries to another country where we can send payments, you can receive all the benefits for which you were eligible except when you were in one of the countries listed in the section Social Security restrictions."

Sounds like the conversion fee on the exchange rate. I also get free ATM through my CU, but I still get charged the 1% conversion fee.

There are several methods:

1. Direct Deposit
2. Bank to bank ACH transfer

An alternative is using your debt card (ATM with Visa logo and do a cash advance) you still pay the 1% conversion fee. No matter how you slice it you're going to have to pay a something to get your funds.
