does this mean that they will let the Thai Bath rise :( :( :( :(
PM: Govt won’t intervene in baht value

* Published: 10/08/2010 at 04:33 PM
* Online news: Breakingnews

The government will not intervene inn the money market to curb the baht's value but will oversee it to prevent the currency fluctuating too much, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said after the cabinet meeting on Tuesday afternoon.

“The government has been keeping a close watch on the baht’s movement. At this stage the export sector is not much affected, as exports continue to increase,” he said.

Mr Abhisit attributed the bahat's continual appreciation to internal problems in Western countries that had caused their currencies to weaken.

Asked whether the government would intervene in the money market if the baht is too strong, the prime minister confirmed that his administration has no policy to do so.

“We have only a policy to keep the Thai currency from fluctuating too much,” he said.

Down down down, hit 31.83 today. That is about a 2 baht decrease in the last 2 months, which is about 5-6000 baht less spending power per month.Everything points to a continuing trend downward,Thai economy at record high,Thai interest rates continuing to rise while US rates are stagnant a very low and the BOT stating they will not interfere because the export market is holding firm!If this trend continues, the baht will probably be around 30 at years end 8-[

Well lets hope they do the same as they have been behind the scene. Problem I see at this point is they are not counting on exports to the west. Heck now I got to beat the bank and this.

Arjay says
We must be patient and other currencies will gain against the baht or the baht will get weaker which ever way you look at it. I trust his judgment but fear I may have bit the dust when it ever happens. Never mind I'll make sure I live until 110 :D

Lepidoptra, I was actually talking about sterling strengthening, (against other currencies in general) rather than the baht weakening!

At this moment sterling is suffering from a bout of weakness, as is the Dollar, and the baht is experiencing a period of strength. The Bank of England Governor is talking about future growth and inflation prospects, both of which it sees as being lower.

We have to hope that sterling's strength will re-emerge again shortly and the baht won't get too strong or at least will not be as strong as sterling!! ;)

just a reminder for the moderators:

this topic is about: "bath what up with dat?"

the sterling strengthening in general should be discussed better in the other topic "The Pounds Recovery? "

I think the problem for many will be having enough income to qualify for their visa, when the baht hits 20 or even 25!

I wouldn't expect the sterling to do well against the baht either, just a little better than the USD!After rising from a low around 46, 3 months ago,the pound has dropped 1 baht over the last few days!

Yes I can see that being a problem for some if it goes that low.

Hopefully they won't be to much by the book and the officers discretion comes into play.

I have noticed something very different lately talk about they can't balance their budget for another five years, The market itself is driving this, the foreign cash flow into it.

What makes you hope that? It certainly hasn't so far.I can more likely see an attitude of, lets get rid of them, they have no money anyway .
The regulations on monetary requirements do not appear to be at the officers discretion if you read them .
The last time I was there an applicant falling short for a marriage visa was bluntly told that he would have to go out the country. This is contrary to international treaties giving married couples the right to reside together in eithers country .
So I wouldn't pin too much hope on that .

quite right indeed,
and IMO it goes even further when you have children!

On second thought your probably right since my Country makes it next to impossible for my wife to get a visa. I guess the states hasn't read the agreement.

I don't know about Cookie but Trubrit I think you have been here long enough to realize that the marriage visa used to be 200K and many people were grandfathered in when I changed to 400K. So maybe it will happen for the guys are ready established here, one can only hope.

Lets face it guys It's not Thailand's fault our countries are in the mess they are. For you guys with rusty memories I started this thread along time ago. What I thought at the time was Thailand was getting one over on us. Well a it turns out it isn't just Thailand, where the value of our money has fallen.

I don't know but I hope it doesn't come down to someone with roots here has to leave.

Not to be rude but if I had less then 40K a month to live on and looking at establishing myself here I would keep working.

Thailand is not as inexpensive to live as to it once was.

We are getting hit from two directions inflation and less value for our money.

I would love to see that treaty you guys are talking about?

Cause my home Country doesn't honor it, if it in fact exists.

Last year Thailand signed up to and benefit from the UNHCR, basically it gives every child a human right to not have its parents taken away for any reason unless a judicial review.. so basically this means if you are a daddy to a thai child thailand is actually breaking its own international treaty with the UN if it makes you do a border run for whatever reason. following on from this thailand have a responsibility to that child to give its foreign dad or mum a visa to stay, not sell or loads of red tape, give!

Ray with all respect we are not talking the same thing . When the requirement was increased from 200 to 400 k yes they grandfathered those affected by their increase . This time they haven't increased anything it will be us that cannot comply with the existing requirement . So there is nothing to grandfather, unless you are suggesting they give us a better exchange rate. In a nutshell . They haven't changed the goal posts we just can't score any more . As for your comment about getting a visa. If you apply for a resident visa for your wife, I am sure , like the UK, they will give it , after suitable checks. It may take a long time but you will get it if your application is genuine . I think where the complications come in is when some try to short cut the system by asking for visit or tourist visa . Whereas here in Thailand we have absolutely no chance of residency, no matter how genuine .We're stuck with the 12 month at a time renewal, if we have enough money. Plus the 90 day reporting as though we were criminals on probation, and always with the thought on our mind, what about next year?
I'll be quite honest . If I was younger I would definitely be considering whether I would want to keep jumping through the hoop every year , but at my age , what the hell.

As Thailand is not a signatory to the UN convention on refugees, and as the mandate of the UNHCR is to do with refugees, not visa holders, I am not sure what relevance it has to the question of "forced separation" of married couples, and border runs. :-k
