Or yuo wait until they do they ATM route and then they will give it back in a few days. Did twice to my American card and I raised hell for hours till I got it back. thats not an easy one to replace. Last one was local card first day of Songkran I just cancelled it I knew it was going to be after Songkran befoer I saw that agian to much room for things to go wrong. Cost me 350 baht. But. it didn't cost me everything I had in the acccount.

Even using the ATM's in front of banks I have had them tell me to come back in four days, not going to happen, they got the keys.

My rule second time through I stop, if it's the American card takes at least six weeks to replace it. So I go to a different branch the following day. It can and has happened to me on a machine malfunction first time through

Ok not enough confusion yet, originally I thought this was a Government move. Now I'm seeing it's a move by the Thai Bankers Association. I beleive that is a private entity. So I'm going to post the list again and the question is are there any banks with ATMS in town that are not a part of the Thai Bankers Association?

As far as I'm concered this fee is usery. I could see for example doubling the fee which would be fifty close to what atm fees are in the U.S. but in this case they have incresed the fee 7 times in one move. Since this is not a Goverment entity this is one time I think a letter campiagn may actually do some good. Evbery baht that we spend there in bringing baht into the coutry is a baht that will no spent in the community where it is needed most. So I'm thinking about these banks but Also the Finance Minister, BOT, Interior Minister, Thailand Chamber of Commerce, American Chamber of Commerce in Thailand, the TAT.

Next question anyone care to complete a form letter we can use, with the way I write I would be the last person who could do that. My proposal is to bury these guys in e-mails and express how detructive we find this to be to the Thai economy at a time like this. Wrong move Wrong time a far as I'm concerned. One letter from me would mean little. But thousand of letter may brign it to someones attention.

The alternative is sit here and complain and not try.

It very well may be a non issue for many of us. git was refunded the service charge so that must be his banks policy. My C/U has a similar policy and I will know for sure in three or fore days when I bring in the monthly dosh. Here's the plan -- 20 from KTB, 20 from Kosikorn, and go to teller SCB for another 20. This should give me info on various ex rates and service charges. Not scientific but a start.

Borrowed from, TV:
In case anyone is interested, if one decides to use an "over-the-counter cash advance" from your Foreign ATM card, the banks here will give you the worst possible exchange rate since it is considered an international credit card transaction. I went to SCB today and inquired about doing this transaction and you can do up to 250k THB. However, even if the money is debited from a checking or savings account, they use the Visa/MC system to do the transaction. 34.14 was the rate I was quoted on doing this transaction.
Anyone tried Kasikorn Bank?

Git that it not true you get the T,T rate but with the added fees it comes out to be the posted rate
besides I don't take cash I have it deposited in to my SCB account I do a calculation on every debit exchange I do with the bank and that pretty much the rule

Just a thouhgt for a letter, a sweet and sour approach. omone want to clean it up I know my writing.

I know this is important to Thailand so I'm going to speak my mind. On one had that yuo can see that Thailand is really trying with offres such a this. Howvcer at the same time the the Thai bankersd Asocaition has raised ATM fee by a factor of seven on foriegn ATM cards to 150 baht. On the yuor saying come here we really want yuor buisness.

On the other hand your saying come here so you can be overcharged getting the currency you need to enjoy yourself. Who gets hurt by this certainly not the banks, but the very people that are working so hard to promote tourism.

This story about the ATM charges ar all over the foriegn forums and people are very upset about it. It not just the locals who participate in the forums. But 100's of thousands of people all over the world. The very people that yuo are trying to attract.

Now which story do you think they will remember, there going to remember starting from the very moment you arrive you will be charged usery prices.

This action is harming Thailand and all the people in the Tourist industry, why do yu you allow this and say nothing. I just don't understand

"Thai hotels step up discounts and promotion packages

BANGKOK: -- Hotels at all major tourist destinations are advertising deep discounts and adding more packages to fill rooms after the latest political turbulence caused many travellers to skip Thailand.

"Many hotels have already extended their promotions introduced some months after the closing of the two airports in Bangkok late last year," Thai Hotel Association president Prakit Chinamourphong said yesterday.

Occupancy is heading down to 30 per cent this month - half of the 60-per-cent rate seen last April, he said.

Niramon Makornpruttipong, regional manager for administration and member-support services at Best Western International, said the hotel chain was offering 20-40-per-cent discounts at all of its properties in the Kingdom for the rest of the year.

Like other players, Best Western is also throwing in more amenities.

Erawan Group president and CEO Kasama Punyagupta said the impact of the recent riots was like that of the airport blockades last year.

"Hotels have been running 50-60-per-cent full, which is 10-15 percentage points off last year's level," he said. "Over the next four weeks, this most recent political unrest will no doubt put pressure on hotels' occupancy rates in a similar pattern as to what happened after the airport closures."

The recently opened Le Meridien Chiang Mai is reportedly cutting room rates more than 50 per cent in order to draw tourists.

The Le Meridien Khao Lak Beach & Spa Resort is selling a holiday package to locals and expat residents for Bt2,199 net per room per night.

The deal includes daily breakfast for two, a 20-per-cent discount on food, 30-per-cent off of spa treatments and 20-per-cent less for airport transfers. This offer also comes with various stimulating recreational activities.

The Ambassador Hotel Bangkok is offering three nights of accommodation for the cost of two until October, while the Zeavola Resort on Krabi's Koh Phi Phi is offering a complimentary choice of a 60-minute massage for one or two persons per stay until June.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) yesterday announced a new campaign called "12 months, 7 Stars, 9 Suns" to boost domestic tourism all year round.

TAT chairman Weerasak Kowsurat said the TAT's board was reviewing if it would change the advertising agency for foreign markets from McCann, as well as the marketing theme. He said some foreign tour operators had stopped selling packages to Thailand.

To allay possible concerns over the recent swine-flu scare in Mexico, 21 TAT offices worldwide have issued a statement on Thailand's precautionary measures, using this opportunity to buff up the Kingdom's tourism image.

Today, Tourism Minister Chumpol Silapa-archa will present a tourism rescue package that includes insurance coverage for foreign tourists and preventive measures against the flu.

Following the Songkran riots, 29 countries and territories issued travel alerts for Thailand. Only three - France, Italy and Hong Kong - have downgraded their warnings.

Boy I'm borrowing from TV a lot today some possible alternatives, unfortunatley I thnk thye are all in Bangkok.

"I have switched to a foreign bank to make my ATM withdrawals - namely Citibank in Bangkok which pays a higher interest rate because you can use a time deposit like a savings account, and charges nothing for use of a foreign card and nothing for using its own cash card for withdrawals anywhere in the world - bingo - so:

NO, I WON'T PAY IT - AND NO, I WON'T LEAVE THAILAND - goodbye Thai banks!

Other foreign banks which may do the same include HSBC, UBS but have no idea if they do or not. "

More info from Citibank, looks like they've got several good options to choose from and free ATM withdrawals.
