I paid out the 62K Baht debt on the family property but the deal was that TW had to have the Chanoot changed to her name so at least, for what it's worth, my name is on the title. Just being perdantic I guess.

IMO:- Anyone who paid cash or thinking of doing so needs their head read.

Bandung, it's the same. You must have paid cash to pay off the debt.

I paid cash and off they went, the next day, to pay off their debts, buy gold, TV, rice steamer, etc.

What's the difference?

Well I didn't see a category for me to vote!
I didn't pay any sinsod and my wife didn't ask for any!I asked her what she would like and she said she always wanted a diamond!I took her to a store she picked out and she selected a white gold pendent with a tiny diamond for 32,000 Baht.I tried to talk her out of it because it was a tourist trap store in the World Trade Center, but she said that was what she wanted. That was it,7 years ago! :D

Hey BKKSTAN, that sounds pretty much like the diamond ring I (the stupid fu...g dumb me!) gave to somebody only to regret it over and over. It was a slightly more expensive one, but that's not the point in this case, is it? The story about the diamond is weird one. The stone wasn't too big - about 1/4 of a carat - but of an exceptional purity and color. I received the stone as a security for the loan I made to somebody who wasn't all that close to me. This happened in Amsterdam back in 1996. The fellow borrowed from me 2500 Guilders (then approximately 1000 EUR). I knew nothing back then about diamonds and since the stone didn't come with a certificate, I insisted on an independent evaluation by a jeweler of my choice, as I was highly suspicious regarding the whole thing. Much to my surprise, the jeweler informed me that the stone was at least twice as valuable as the money to be lent (that was more than ten years ago, imagine what it is worth now). On top of that, I was informed that for a small fee I could be issued a certificate on the stone from the very same jeweler. Of course, I had no intention of keeping the stone - rather was looking forward to making a small monetary profit on the loan interest. As I learned much later, the not so close friend of mine was (next to his other employment) a small time coke dealer operating in the night clubs of Amsterdam that were considered the territory of the Yugoslavian mafia (the guy was from Peru). They caught him stealing their business and they dealt with him. He was stabbed multiple times in his chest and they cut his throat. Miraculously, the guy survived it but was deported from the Netherlands back to Peru as soon as he recovered from his injuries.

So there I was left with the stone. Initially, I planned to sell it to the jeweler at a deep discount for him but still a very hefty profit for me. But as it happened, I became attached to the stone. I kept it hidden at my appartment and would open the box now and then and play with it. At that time, every Guilder counted for me, so the ownership came at a price. That only made me grow closer to the stone. Years later, I took it with me to Sydney as this was one of the items I was unwilling to depart myself from even for a day. I kept it hidden from everybody - even from my Thai girlfriend. I could never afford to buy her any expensive gifts as my savings were swalloved by the expenses associated with getting my degree and by supporting her when her financial support (coming from the USA) was cut off. I felt pretty bad about it and about a month prior to my departure for Europe (and on the basis of the belief - to which I was misled - that there is a future for us), I made the most ridiculous thing. I took the stone out from my hiding place and told her I want to make a ring from the diamond and give it to her as a seal of our relationship and our future. ](*,) She was extatic! She chose to have the ring made from a white gold for which I paid as well ](*,) She dropped me at the moment I left her at the airport gate. When I was confronted with the fact, I asked her to mail me the ring, as it was given to her under circumstances that were no longer valid. She said she would do that as soon as she has enough money to pay for the insurance associated with the international mail. I offered to send her the money but she said she would pay it from her pocket.

It never happened. I was getting on with my life and was too busy with other issues back in Europe (and was still hoping that she would eventually end up with me), so I wasn't pushing the issue and put it to rest ](*,) Much later, I learned from my Singaporean friend that she never intended to send it back to me. She even almost broke up with her new boyfriend from the USA, who wanted her to send it to me and even offered to pay the costs. By the time I learned the whole truth about her, she was already back in her little village nearby Udon - stcuk there until the next stupid farang comes along and so far none has been that dumb as me. I called her and insisted that she sends it back to me, as I no longer held any hopes for the two of us. I was told she sold it. I got over it as there was nothing I could do about it. However, about 6 months ago my Singaporean friend invited my ex to SG. (My ex has no idea I am still in touch with my friend and that she keeps telling me things.) And she said that my ex had the ring on her!

I don't have the time to travel to Thailand until the next season in 2008. But when I get there, I am taking the first flight to Udon and I will recover the stone no matter what it takes and regardless of any potential trouble. The "precious" has to be back with me, because unless this happens, I will keep on banging my head against the wall. ](*,)

Nowdays, I am willing to buy them an ice cream. That's about it.

:D

Easy, I live on the property and can still take advantage of my investment. It hasn't been pissed against the wall or hocked by the extended family as what would happen if a pile of cash was placed on the plate with the bananas rather than a chanoot.
