Have any of you had them installed recently?
If so, by whom, and what did they cost?

Entire house was approx 35,000 , inc the front doors , with swinging doors on the inside of the sliding glass doors.

all fitted internally to the windows

Cant remember the name of the company, landlord organised it and I paid for it .

Most places that do the external gates and fences can also do it for u.

We did ours 10+ years ago......the man is no longer in business. But some food for thought:

As with all things in Thailand, there is good, there is not so good, and there is bad. A high quote may be because of a heavier grade of steel or more steel to the guard. A low quote may be because of a thinner grade of steel or less steel to the guard. And of course, a high quote could be a thinner grade of steel by an unscrupulous craftsman.
I'd suggest looking at a variety of guards at different peoples' homes. Get a feel for what you're looking for before engaging in the bargaining process.
Good luck!

Good advice from everyone, just my comments:

- Concur with grade, ensure you see and feel the grills you are having installed.
- Different designs (besides grade of metal/chrome) will effect price.
- From 2 years ago, average size window 3.5k.....heavy chrome with flower design.
- Watch or have someone watch the install, ensure: level / right angles / flush seal covers / centered properly.
- Take a good look at welds, ensure they are buffed and sealed (at least look semi-professionaly done).

my little comment is that you can have a good grille, but it can be rendered useless, if it is not attached to the wall / window in a solid manner..some I have seen have been screwed on, so therefore can be screwed off..so ask how they intend to attach them, and check to see if there is a weak spot in the design...

"Take a good look at welds, ensure they are buffed and sealed"

Advice that you will appreciate the first time you stick your hand inside the window guard to wipe the windows!

Concur with secure mounting, though a crow bar will and some muscle can pry it lose or at least pull free the brink it's mounted to!!

Additional notes:
- For windows greater than a meter in length, make sure they use 6 mounting points vice just the 4 corners.
- Don't buy the picture in the book purchase, seeing is believing.....better safe then sorry.
- Ask about size / dia of mounting covers or ensure they drill in the right spot the first time. I was lucky that the covers were big enough to cover the missed aligned hole(s) in the wall. Had the holes refilled, drives me crazy....how hard is it to size / measure everything...place a dot on the wall and drill...vice eyeing it!!!

N.B.: Most contractors will show you designs from the same/similar catalogs, however the prices quoted may vary wildly from one to the next. Primarily (IMHO), because they seemingly price the job according to how expensive your house looks. Quotes for my home earlier this year for the same design picked from a catalog ranged from THB 80k to THB 160k. I ditched them all and got custom (and much, much fancier) security "bars" made, painted, and installed for THB 33-36k all-in. That's for roughly 32 sqm of windows and doors I would recommend them except for the fact that I fired them for screwing up a recent unrelated job. :(

Where do I find these "contractors," and why did you ditch them?

They were being very sloppy and screwing up. When I objected to them doing things their way rather than the way we agreed, they started bytchin about perhaps I should find someone else to do the work. So I told them to pack their crap up and have a nice day. Finishing the work myself. Although it really is a waste of my time, it's not much and gives me something to do when I get bored.
