Interior House Painting (abt. 170 m2)

I've RTFF but can't find any recent recommendations for a house painter.
Does anyone know one?

Yes, Somchai was good; but for our next house, his bid was higher than the other guys we used. They were also very good and clean, used masking tapes etc. They did say that they could bid low because they live in our village. Where do you live? We live about 12km northwest of the old Lotus, Ban Chiang Pang. You are welcome to check out the paint job in our home.

Your house is on the other side of the Ring Road from mine. But It may still be worth your time to make the trip. You can take a look at the paint job, plus I would try to have the painter come at the same time. Please check your PM for you my tel #.

What price you you guys talking about??

What's the rough estimate on cost of painting.....Interior only, living room/kitchen/2 bedrooms w/ patching-putty fixes....moving furniture/curtains/electronics and of course cleaning up after!!

I can give some rough figures as we are now just finishing painting the new addition to our house. One qualifier it is not in Udon but in Amnat Charoen. Approximately 100 m2, with high vaulted ceilings. Doors and windows not installed yet and no furniture or electronics to be moved. We were given an estimate by a contractor of 6,000 baht, labor only. Decided to do it ourselves since the same guy did our tile and I wasn't happy with it, and from seeing how the other contractors work I don't think I would have trusted anyone. So we are almost finished and have used nine 5 gallon cans of paint inside and out. Four for primer and five for finish coat. New construction so the walls are all unpainted cement and the ceiling is unpainted gyp board. Total cost for paint, brushes, rollers, etc (and yes, masking tape), was 8500 baht. Probably not useful information but should give you some idea.

Best thing to do is to get a couple estimates from local contractors and check on work they have done. We are quite limited in our choice being out here in the sticks and haven't found any contractors that can build to western standards.

If I can chime in here: When it comes to things like paint, buy the best and later you will be glad you did. I used Delux brand inside and out on the recommendation of the paint maven guy at Global House (wish I could recall his name for you - he REALLY knows his stuff). Anyway, later on, I had some security bars installed and the welder was careful, but mauled the (pure white) paint job up around the windows and doors. All it took was a little soap and water to look good as new. What's more, everytime it rains, the rain actually washes any soot right off as if it the paint were Teflon. A mop, soap, and water every 6 months or so is all that is required for the areas where rain does not reach. Same to be said about the interior walls. I have 2 artistically enthusiastic kids and white walls. Yes, it's more expensive, but worth every satang, IMHO. Delux brand.

If you want to go cheap, hire a typical painter who will cut your cheap paint with 25-50% water so that it's easy to apply. You won't pay so much and, if the painter doesn't splatter everywhere, the final product will look good enough. That is, until the paint turns to dust, or you try to wipe fingerprints from the wall. Look at most all government buildings/schools/and cheaper housing estates when they are freshly painted and a year or two later.

Or, you can buy good paint (there's a wide selection of good quality paints....but you pay). Don't allow the painters to cut with more than the recommended amount of water (??10%??).

When we have any painting done, we buy the paint....rather than have the painter buy it himself. I have heard of some unscrupulous painters who buy empty containers of the quality paints and fill them with cheap paint. Don't know if it's true, but t.i.t.

OT only uses Dulux paint, the same as KD, internal and external. Internal I do myself - it's such a simple job to do I can't see the point of paying someone else to do it although rolling the ceilings can get messy. The externals are done by Thai painters and thats because I dont fancy balancing myself on the bamboo scaffolding needed to get the job done. I always buy the paint and pay about 20k labour and it takes 2 / 3 men about 5 days.
I paint the gates and railings myself which really is a pain in the backside - you need to put on your headphones and SPF50, and start daydreaming about something or other whilst doing the job as progress is slow.
Whatever you do make sure it's all well prepared before painting or you'll be doing it again soon, OT has first hand experience of this.

Hi,
For the metalwork, outside, try Hammerite paint, You don't use a primer, just go over the fencing/gate with a wire brush to get the loose rust off. The paint then combines with the rust and neutralizes it. It works very well. I did a boat engine this way, sold the boat ten years later, engine looked like new. I had put on two coats of Hammerite.
This saves a lot of work in prep. and priming. I've tried to get this paint in Udon, no luck. Tried nearly every paint shop in town. Going to BKK in a few months so will try there. The paint is a bit more costly than normal paint but IMO worth it. You also don't have the same range of colours. You save money, and work, by not having to buy a primer or sand paper, and the time it lasts.
If anyone can find it in Udon please post. I asked this before and every place i went to, that was suggested, looked at me as if i had gone mad, and said no such thing. TIT.
The bloke who invented this paint, lived in my home town. He also invented the multi-change record player, those of you who are a bit older will remenber them.

A bit late but I bought Hammerite in either HomePro or Global house, not sure if it was Udon or Kohen Khen, about 6 months ago
