You can spend a small fortune on roof insulation but if you like to leave doors and windows open for the fresh air your kind of defeating the object of keeping the hot air out.
I think putting refelctive foil close to the roof tiles is the wrong way to go. The heat in the loft space is at it's hottest there. It must be more effective to put the refective foil above the ceiling boards where it's reflecting less heat.
The way I went was to have wide, 1.3mtr, airiated soffit boards. The wider they are the more shade given to the walls and the cooler air under the soffit board is drawn up into the loft space. I used ceiling boards that already had the refective foil attached and installed two solar powered extraction fans to move the hot air out of the loft space.
I'm not saying this is a perfect system but it seems to work quite well. A/C usage is only required for short periods in the bedrooms. Floor/wall fans are enough in the TV room and the kitchen.

Agreed.

My builder mentioned these foil backed boards, but when I started looking I mistakenly looked for boards with insulation attached, not foil.
I'll have to check on the price difference.
Just another option thrown at me and thanks to all.
