Oh, I meant the referees were playing for Cameroon, and should have noted that they were not dressed in all-black like the Kiwis.

It was over by the time I got home from work, but it did conjure up memories of William the Silent defeating the Spanish army leading to the creation of the Netherlands somewhere around 1581.Earnest wrote:I especially enjoyed the Netherlands game last night, the first Van Persie goal was brill.Zidane wrote:Spain 1 Netherlands 5......absolutely unbelievable !
Afterwards it was a choice between the Baltimore-Toronto baseball game or Chile playing Australia. I went with baseball, and switched to the Aussies during commercials.

Well i havent managed to get any of the scores predicted accurately so far in the WC but i have picked all the winning teams to date ....... now heres where it gets tricky as i went for Columbia and Uruquay wins today but the England Italy game as got draw written all over it ... the first of the tournament .
Woys team talk should be easy ..... in the past it has always been England expects !! ... but this WC with an inexperienced squad n all the young guns ENGLAND REALLY SHOULDNT EXPECT !! ..
score draw ... 1-1 or possibly 2-2 ... WITH 2 goals coming from the penalty spot .
Holland look like the real deal and could go all the way , obvious really after runners up last time and Van Gaals last tournament as manager ... the future bright - the futures ORANGE .

Or Blue since the refs are wearing the kit of the Netherlands leaving the Dutchmen in blue, not orange, jerseys.

Italy 1 England 1 at half time.
England had the better chances in the early stages but a schoolboy error and slack defending led to Italy's goal.
At a short corner you have to get two defenders out to prevent a two one one situation and when the ball was passed over the centre of the pitch outside the box the England player (Sturridge or Welbeck I think) was too slow to react allowing a low hard shot to pass a multitude of players, including Hart to hit the net.
England recovered well with a left sided move ending with an excellent Rooney cross which saw Sturridge finish well.
The Italian's defence were also caught napping with Sturridge finish well but easily, unchallenged.
At the closing stages England survived two scares with one shot well cleared off the line whilst Hart was stranded well away from his line. then almost immediately afterwards the upright saved England to keep the scores level.
In my opinion England should target the left back of Italy with the pace of Sturridge/Sterling but they appear to be giving too much room to Pirlo which could punish them with his passing and vision.

FT Italy 2 England 1
Balotelli scores with a header 4 minutes into the second half.
In the second half Hodgson brought on Barkley, Wilshire and Lallana for Welbeck, Henderson and Sturridge respectively, and despite creating some good opportunities were unable to find an equaliser.
England conceded a needless free kick some distance out in injury time and Pirlo hit a fierce swerving, dipping shot which struck the crossbar with Hart stranded.
A very good spectacle to watch and England can take some good issues from their performance into the next match.

I dont think England played too badly but they were weak in the centre of defence. For years we had Ferdinand and Terry shoring things up but theyve gone now.Cahill and Jagielka are good honest pros but not world class imo.
But England have some promising youngsters,Sterling,Barkley,Sturridge,Lallana,Shaw etc.and even though we lost I feel a lot more positive than during the awful Capello World Cup campaign of 2010.
With Costa Rica surprisingly beating Uruguay 3-1,Englands match against Uruguay in midweek looks to be almost certainly a "must win",also the last group game against Costa Rica as well.
I presume Woy took Sturridge off because he had a knock or was just knackered.Rooney is very lucky there isnt much competition for places up front....poor again today and that corner kick he sliced into the crowd !
England had there chances.....Sterling,Gerrard,Sturridge,Rooney,Welbeck,that Italian defenders deflection but luck wasnt with us.Then again,Jagielka headed off the line and Pirlo hit the bar so maybe things evened up.
Two poor goals to concede though.....nobody closed the guy down and he could take his time slotting in the first and Cahill caught out of position for the second.
I thought the referee had a good game, though, fair play.
Englands physio.....It doesnt say much when you dislocate your ankle celebrating the goal and get carried off on a stretcher does it ! He'll never live that down !
Other results last night for those just logging in........
Colombia 3 Greece 0 ; Uruguay 1 Costa Rica 3 ;
Japan v Ivory Coast kicking off in 5 minutes......time for another beer, guys ?

Japan 1 Ivory Coast 2
Another enjoyable game.Honda showed the right accord giving Japan the lead with a left foot screamer after 15 minutes but the game was transformed on 60 minutes with the substitute appearance of Didier Drogba.
Ivory Coast upped their game and scored in the 64th and 65th minute through Bony and Gervino.
That seemed to knock the stuffing out of Japan and they never really threatened after that.
Tonights/tomorrow mornings matches (Thai times)
Switzerland v Ecuador 11pm Sunday
France v Honduras 2am Monday
Argentina v Bosnia-Hercegovina 5am Monday

Argentina 2 Bosnia 1
Poor game this morning but one flash of genius from Messi was enough to win the match, but the sphincters of the Argentina players and fans must have been twitching when Bosnia pulled one back with five minutes to go. Messi underachieved for his country again despite his goal, as did Man City's Aguero and Real Madrid's Di Maria. I should have stayed in bed.

Switzerland 2 Ecuador 1.....quite an even match. The Swiss controlled most of the play but Ecuador were dangerous on the counter attack. It looked to be heading for a 1-1 draw when in the 2nd minute of injury time,Valencia the Ecuador captain, outsprinted the Swiss defence down the right and sent a perfect cross to an unmarked Ecuadorian forward in the box.The guy had time to control the ball and pick his spot but,for reasons known only to him,he dithered for an age and the Swiss managed to clear. From this clearance the Swiss broke away and scored....absolutely amazing....the Ecuadorian forward went from hero to zero in about 5 seconds !
France 3 Honduras 0.....fatigue getting the better of me,I didnt watch this one but goaline technology was used for the first time with France's second goal.....a shame it wasnt in place for England v Germany in 2010.
Argentina 2 Bosnia-Hercegovina 1.....managed to get up to see most of the second half. The Bosnians seemed to be giving as good as they got and it took an inspirational goal by Messi to give Argentina a 2-0 cushion.....but maybe not the best of games as socksy says.
So,11 games so far and 37 goals and no draws.....the first time this has ever happened in a World Cup finals.
Tonights games,Thai times.....
Portugal v Germany 11pm.....Ronaldo fit for the Portugese
Iran v Nigeria 2am Tuesday morning.....A MUST for those who have drawn Iran in the World Cup sweepstake
Ghana v USA 5am Tuesday morning.....time for Americans to get together and forget Obama,Iraq and rumours about Miley Cyrus' breast implants.

Yes incredible games so far , lots of goals , end to end footy and no dreary draws ,,lets hope it stays this way all the way thru the whole month ... yes some strange results (Holland v Spain being the main one) but NO REAL BIG suprises YET , Costa Rica beating Uruquay a bit of a shock ..Zidane wrote:So,11 games so far and 37 goals and no draws.....the first time this has ever happened in a World Cup finals.

DM has only got the winning team wrong in 3 games so far those being Uruquay (i forecast a win) , Switzerland (Dozy DM said Draw) and England (Blinded by patriotism i said Draw) ..so after looking in my crystal balls heres my predictions for todays matches ..
Portugal v Germany the first score draw of the tournament
Iran v Nigeria ... Nigeria win
Ghana v USA .. comfortable win for Ghana .
Come the morning ......see you on the other side !!
