France 2 Nigeria 0

Spirited show from the Nigerians but they didn't take their chances and were disorganized in defense, which they paid for in the second half where it all fell to pieces.

France play either Germany of Algeria in the last eight.

The last representative of the British Empire is out. The sun has set on the Empire in this competition.

Germany 2 Algeria 1(AET Full time score 0-0).....I thought the Germans, overall, were pretty unimpressive.Algeria had there chances, particularily in the first half and it was only when they tired in extra time that the Germans were able to find a way through.
France 2 Nigeria 0.....Nigeria can count themselves unlucky as they were the dominant side for long periods in the second half but two late goals sent the French through.

Tonights/tomorrow mornings games (Thai times)

Argentina v Switzerland,11pm Tuesday night.....cant see the Swiss defence being able to cope with the likes of Messi,Higuain somehow.
Belgium v USA,3am Wednesday morning....although Belgium won their 3 group games they have been a bit dour,so far.
I think the USA has a chance but will have to score the first goal.If Belgium score first I think the Americans will find it difficult against a Belgian defence that only conceded 1 goal (a penalty) in the 3 group games.
Just when I thought our chance had passed, you go and save the best for last.

Cant really see the Yanks overcoming the Belgians.I think the winners of the World Cup will be a South American side, probably the winners of the Brazil v Colombia match.

Those who discount the ability of the US to punch above its weight, particularly in team sports, should think back to the “miracle on ice” at Lake Placid in 1980.

While, from a technical standpoint, it is hard to give the US team a chance of winning the WC at better than between slim and none, they are well motivated, well led and have an excellent record under head coach Jurgen Klinsmann and (apart from the home team Brazil) they are also the best supported team there.

Few gave the US a chance of surviving the group stage of death; having survived that and moved into the knockout phase, if the sporting gods were to smile on them and they were to beat Belgium tonight, then the impossible actually gains some degree of plausibility.

The odds are against it, it’s extremely hard to see it, and even though it’s a completely different game I can’t get out of my mind what happened at Lake Placid in 1980....... but first they have to get through today!

The sprouts are up 2-0 in a fast-paced very entertaining game. Does the United States have the will to come back like they did in the Miracle on Ice back in the 1960 Olympics? https://www.google.ca/#q=us+wins+olympic+hockey+in+1960

2-1 now as the U.S. is charging back in a great spectacle.

Despite a brave comeback attempt by the U.S.A., they fell to the superior team. This was one action-packed exciting tussle.

indeed a good game , the belgians have dominated almost all the game , have missed to many chances in the 90 minutes , so no miracles today for the us , and why you guy's always must go back in the past , the games are played in the present :D ...i really was surprised how weak the americans were , they did play better before ...maybe next time better... ;)

Argentina 1 Switzerland 0 (AET,90 mins 0-0).....As expected Argentina dominated this one but the Swiss held firm until two minutes from the end of extra time, when a defensive lapse cost them dear.Even then the Swiss managed to hit the post in injury time but were unable to force a penalty shootout.
It has to be said that Argentina without Messi would be ordinary. He was in the thick of things again but his teammates seem slow to react to his little flicks and passes that make him so effective at Barcelona.
Belgium 2 USA 1 (AET,90 mins 0-0).....This was more like it from Belgium in a pulsating game.USA keeper,Tim Howard, was man of the match making save after save. The USA were brave but were simply outplayed for most of the match.Dempsey and Jones had chances to take the match to penalties, near the end,but it was not to be.
De Bruyne and Lukaku scored for the Belgians on 93 and 105 minutes with Green giving the Americans hope just 2 minutes after Belgians second.
On this form I would expect Belgium to sweep aside Argentina and make it through to the semis where they may well find there great rivals The Netherlands waiting.

No matches tonight or tomorrow but there are two episodes of Chicago Fire 2 between 7pm-9pm tonight after which many exhausted soccer fans may want to consider an early night for a change.
The football all starts again on Friday night with France v Germany at 11pm followed by Brazil v Colombia at 3am.....two matches not too miss !
Just when I thought our chance had passed, you go and save the best for last.

Why did you also talk abt the past....?

Better talk abt the future. 10 worldcups more perhaps the yanks are at the same low level as the UK :)

So, in the extremely unlikely event all my forecasts being realised, the quarter finals would be as set out below, with Costa Rica being the only real surprise, in my opinion.
Brazil v Columbia
France v Germany.
Netherlands v Costa Rica.
Argentina v Belgian
..............

Feeling very happy ; eight out of eight \:D/. But wish I had been able to place an "accumulator" Bet; the winnings from which could have fnanced me to a trip to Brazil and a front row seat at the final. Oh yes, and opportunity to check out some , (maybe just one, in my condition) of Zids human menagerie :D [-X .
Now, to totally destroy my brief moment of fame, and bring forth howls of disbelief and redicule from you learned ones, herewith my forecasts, for the quarters. This time, I will be happy if I get one forecast correct :(

Brazil v Columbia . Subject to unbiased officiating; & pitch invasion, or other force majeure not being a factor.
France v German. France has been playing smooth flowing football, but need their strikers to step, now.
Neth'ld v Costa Rica. Tenacity,Determination & Implacable will to win. One team has it, the other doesn't.
Argentina v Belgium Without Aquero, Argentina seem disjointed & their players not on Messis' wavelength.

So semi-finals: Columbia v France and Costa Rica v Belgium.

OK, carry on laughing.  \:D/
