Too bad there had to be a loser. Both the Bills and the Chiefs are Super Bowl caliber. Excellent playoff games this season. Just hope my home state Chiefs can maintain the momentum.

I can't remember, but didn't the NFL add some playoff games this year? I remember in the fifties, the League had just one playoff, the Championship Game. The East winner (usually Cleveland) vs. the West winner (usually the Detroit Lions). Chicago had two teams: the Cardinals and the Bears. In 1959, the Chicago Cardinals came north to play the Toronto Argonauts and beat them around 55-26. Half the game was under Canadian rules and half under U.S. rules.

That was when there were 2 leagues, AFL and NFL. They just added one team from each division to the playoffs this year.

The West: Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, Baltimore Colts, Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers. The team with the best record in the East met the team with the best record in the West for the NFL Championship. The AFL came about in the sixties. I remember the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League beat the Buffalo Bills of the AFL, 35-21 or 38-21.

When the National Football League (NFL) merged with the American Football League (AFL) in 1970, the playoffs were expanded to eight teams. The playoffs were expanded to ten teams in 1978, twelve in 1990, and fourteen in 2020.

More games = more revenue for the league.

You are correct, I didn’t read the post correctly as he only referenced the 50’s. The AFL inauguration season was 1960.

Yes, Lenny is in the NFL Hall of Fame as is his coach Hank Stram. Today's Chiefs are reminiscent of those times but are more dynamic. The Chiefs' current coach is headed to the Hall of Fame as well I would think.

Something to think about, if the Dallas Cowboys had not gotten an expansion team in the NFL in the 60’s, the Kansas City Chiefs may not exist as we know them now.

I liked Hank Stram, George Halas (Bears), Paul Brown (Browns), Vince Lombardi (Green Bay), Bear Bryant (Alabama), Johnny Vaught (Ole Miss Rebels), Bobby Dodd (Georgia Tech), Shug Jordan (Auburn), but most of all, I liked Coach Bud Peter Grant of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Minnesota Vikings.

I like Bud Grant as well. His teams won four Grey Cups and he led the Vikings to the Super Bowl four times. Unfortunately they lost all four games. One of those Super Bowl loses was to the the Kansas City Chiefs. Grant is a tough dude and one of the most respected head coaches in the game.

Bud is 94 years old and still kickin'.
