Post by Zidane » March 19, 2016, 12:49 pm

Not a great draw for City but could have been worse,I spose.Tie of the round undoubtedly Barcelona v Atletico Madrid.
In the Europa League, certainly tough for Liverpool but Klopp back at his old stomping ground will know about the strengths and weaknesses of Dortmund.

A European Competition for those clubs not good enough for a European Competition. :(
Just yet another way of making money...
True Bob,But you may remember the old " Milk Cup " was also referred to by that name by Liverhooligans,When Everton got to the final.....

Last night......
PSG 2 Man City 2......City twice come from behind and have a good chance of making the semi finals now.
Vfl Wolfsburg 2 Real Madrid 0....certainly the shock of the round,so far.Can Wolfsburg hang on in Madrid ?

And just to confirm Tuesday nights results which I inadvertently put in the "Grass Roots Footie" thread

Barcelona 2 Atletico Madrid 1.....Torres gives Atletico the lead on 25 minutes but is sent off 10 minutes later for two needless yellow cards.Suarez scores a brace in the second half to give Barca a slender lead.
Bayern Munich 1 Benfica 0.....Vidal scores for Bayern after just 2 minutes but they are unable to breakdown a resolute Benfica defence again.

Europa League tonight which includes Borussia Dortmund v Liverpool.....the return of the Klopp.
Just when I thought our chance had passed, you go and save the best for last.

After doing so well hopefully City can hold on and go through. They only need to lose 1-0 at home to exit which hopefully won't happen.

No way Zid. The shock of the round was at Wolfsburg when Madrid's Marcello got taken out by a sniper. Cheating *****. [-X

A little ambiguous Zid, :-s but, since there exists no precedent for deducting a goal from Wolfsburg :-" these must be your, (90min.), forecast scores for tonight's matches. Really, 11 goals in the two matches  ; and you recently, most unkindly, implied I was imbibing too much! [-X
I think both matches are too close to call, as regards which clubs will progress. Extra time and/or shootouts could well come into play, (no pun intended  ). Since it won't cost me anything :D, I pick City & Wolfsburg to provide a double surprise , and progress to the semis.

Congratulations to Manchester City who reached the semi finals of the UEFA Champions League with a hard fought 1-0 win over PSG.Kevin de Bruyne's 76th minute goal settled the tie after Kun Aguero had a first half penalty saved.
Joe Hart made several fine saves ,particularily when the score was 0-0.
In the other tie a Cristiano Ronaldo hat trick saw off Vfl Wolfsburg.Ronaldo struck twice in the first 17 minutes to overturn the first leg deficit as Real Madrid eased to a 3-0 win and 3-2 on aggregate.
Tonights games....
Barcelona v Atletico Madrid (first leg 2-1)
Porto v Bayern Munich (first leg 0-1)

I hope City go on to win it even just for Pelligrini. The man has acted with so much dignity and calmness since the news that he would not remain in post after the season's completion. I wonder how long before this was made public that he actually knew.

Agreed; a man with real class. =D> Why wouldn't he be the automatic first choice of any EPL club possibly looking to change/appoint the Manager, (i.e. Utd. Everton).

Sevilla 1 Atletico Bilbao 2 (agg.3-3,Sevilla win on penalties)
Shakhtar Donetsk 4 Sporting Braga 0 (agg.6-1)

Manchester City will play Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals.
That means City could face incoming manager Pep Guardiola in the final, after his Bayern Munich side were drawn against Atletico Madrid in the other tie.
Guardiola will replace current City boss Manuel Pellegrini in the summer.
The first leg will take place in Manchester at Etihad Stadium on 26 April, with the return leg in Spain's capital on 4 May.
"It is a difficult draw," said former Real Madrid boss Pellegrini. "It doesn't matter which team we played. The options are the same.
"I always prefer to finish at home but that is not the most important thing."

Liverpool will play Villarreal in the Europa League semi-finals.
The Reds' reward for Thursday's dramatic victory over Borussia Dortmund is a trip to Spain for the first leg on 28 April, with the return at Anfield on 5 May.
In the other semi-final, Spanish side Sevilla, who are looking to win the competition for the third successive year, face Ukraine's Shakhtar Donetsk.
The final takes place in Basel, Switzerland, on 18 May.

In this wonderful 'Fairy Tale' season of football, why not; with City , (Pellegrini), coming out on top. :D  After all, pre-season, this would have been considered a more likely scenario, than Leicester winning the EPL Title.
