I was on night shift so, after cleaning the barnacles off my snorkel, I tuned into the live broadcast. I think there was maybe only seven or eight corners in the whole game and Scotland's first one was 18 minutes from the end. One free kick and some rowdy penalty claims from the land of Hitler's birth. There's a massive twerp does BBC Scotland's footie yackover and with the 4 minutes of extra time remaining, he regaled us with some sad story about Scotland coming up short in similar circumstances at some otherwise unforgettable east European venue way back before I had breakfast. Just reading today that last night's win maintains Scotland's 43-year unbeaten run in Vienna. I know, that's not near as impressive as England's 56 year wait for... something or other but maybe a betting man should take note for next time.

That's one MASSIVE game over and since Israel dumped heavily on Austria already, they come to Hampden for Scotland's second MASSIVE game next month. Scotland dumped Israel out of the Nations Cup on penalties earlier so this will be a good one (I know, it doesn't take much).

Scotland played well but, as always, the Jocks are sticking their heads over the parapets after one result.

The fact is that they wont qualify automatically for the World Cup and, IF, they manage to get runners up spot in the group, they wont get through the 2 play off games against better opposition.

They have a decidedly average team at the moment.

Scotland qualifying for Qatar is very, very far from a done deal. Any ***** knows that.

Since there's no way of telling who will be their opposition at that time and if that opposition will be as good as they are now, only a ***** would say failure is inevitable.

They are the best young talent from a shallow pool with a manager who only got the job 28 months ago. Maybe a ***** sees that as bunch of losers already.

The way I see it is the same as their recent run at the Euros where they qualified by every back door invented. It's a chance to make some players and some fans happy. I had a blast watching and following the last Scottish national team that dreamed they could (yes, I am that old). Who cares if they drew with Brazil and then lost to Costa Rica and never got past the knock out rounds? It's not about overachieving and getting above one's station in life, a fatal affliction of successive English teams BTW. It's about being there, being a part of it and when the odd chance comes along to make one of the more favored teams look silly, enjoying THAT moment and NOT thinking we WILL do that again next week.

It's like those heady days of our yoof down in Pattaya back in the 80's when unshowered, unshaven and bladdered, you stumbled into the Marine Bar Disco. You knew you had absolutely no chance pulling any of the 'superstars' but it was great fun watching those flash buggers that thought they could crashing and burning.

Nice to see the Footballroos getting another stab at it. Japan's been a bit of a spoiler of late though and have qualified for the last six WC's which is narrowly beats Scotland's serial WC appearance record. The Vietnamese are tenacious and stubborn and can just plain run you into the ground... like Scotland.
