A real heartbreaker for the U.S. team. Out played Portugal most of the game and had to settle for a tie when Portugal scores with less then a minute left. Well, not out of it yet.

Bit late now, but my observations on the England team having wasted my time watching both games so far. I don't watch Premier League matches on the tv, so all my info is from the sports news on the internet and goal highlights on Thai tv. Or once every couple of years Match of the day in Blighty for a couple of weekends;
Hart, GK - crap. Cardiff GK Marshall been rated as the best in England last season. Makes spectacular saves. Hart looks nervous and all goals were savable.
Jagielka, Baines - crap. Baines might attack well, but he does not defend half as well as Ashley Cole. Cole should have gone, as should have Terry.
Cahill - one of the few bright spots. Solid rock.
Gerrard - past it, too many mistakes, without his mistakes, Suarez would not have scored. Lampard would have been better.
Henderson - who is he and what actually does he/ did he do?
Wellbeck - ditto. Incognito.
Barkley - should have started games - looks like Rooney 10 years ago. Got skill and fire in his belly.
Sturridge/Sterling, tried hard, show promise.
Rooney - worked hard, tried his best, which was'nt good enough.
England will never win anything in my lifetime, or come close. The National team has been a disapointment since 1974. The truth hurts. End of Sermon.

You missed one of the interesting issues thaiguzzi. What about Roy H? Do you think Prince Phillip might have been a better manager? You know his people skills and all.

Very accurate assessment by thaiguzzi . Agree only 3 or 4 of the England players that actually played in the WC can come home with merit and say they feel they did ok ... sadly too many not given the chance by Woy and those he did pick seemed unable to make any difference like Rooney , Gerrard , Johnson , Henderson etc etc .. positives for the future Barkley , Sterling and ...?? err im thinking .

Dont normally support the US in sporting events but tough luck on the Americans last night , playing some good football i hope they can get a result against the Germans to progress , Klinsman has done and is doing a great job ...

Tournament winners ?? still looks wide open , Brazil , Argies and Germany not looking so good , just scrapping thru so anyone except these to lift the cup and im a happy monkey ... nothing against these nations just time for a change and the predictable , the likes of Chile , or Belgium to prevail would be great for the game IMO .

Last nights results......
Belgium 1 Russia 0....An 88th minute goal sends Belgium through to the knockout stages.Russia have to beat Algeria in their final game to have any chance of progressing.
South Korea 2 Algeria 4......Korea 3 goals down at half time and woeful.Improved in the second half but too little, too late.Looks like they are going home early.
USA 2 Portugal 2....An equaliser deep in the heart of stoppage time kept Portugals slim World Cup hopes alive and denied the Americans a place in the knockout stages for now.Portugal have to hope Germany beat the USA and they can overcome Ghana whilst overcoming an inferior goal difference of minus 5 against the Americans,at present.

Sorry for getting the Belgium and USA kick off times the wrong way about.....fatigue setting in after all these late nights but re-assuring to know that kopkei takes notice of my posts ! 8)

4 games tonight/tomorrow morning.....hopefully I've got the kick off times/teams correct.

Australia v Spain,11pm Monday night
Netherlands v Chile,11pm Monday night
Brazil v Cameroon,3am Tuesday morning
Croatia v Mexico,3am Tuesday morning
Just when I thought our chance had passed, you go and save the best for last.

In one of the few games I happen to have caught, I must admit I was taken back for a moment seeing Klinsman, who comes across as an all-German character to me, to be wearing a shirt with USA badge. To my mind, quite a surprising appointment to coach a USA team. And, of course, USA meet Germany next.

After an involuntary abstention from all forms of the media over the past month or so, I am now wallowing in the dehumanising world of IT, catching up on all the World Cup acton so far. This preparatory to expressing my take on the tournament to date , and which teams I expect/hope will progress to the quarters.
Meantime, my picks for tonight.
Spain to win its first game in a hard fought matchup against Oz.
Chile, missing stars Vidal & Aranguiz, to miss out against Netherlands.
A disappointing Brazil, ( with the aid of the Officials if necessary! :-$ ),to beat Cameroon.
Croatia, to receive some justice, bearing in mind their opening game rip off, to come out on top over a spirited Mexico team. Both teams, in my view, are better than a somewhat ordinary Brazilian side.
However, was Brazil allowed to exit the tournament, the disenchanted/deprived poor of the country would have no reason to keep the lid on their discontent. This would in turn open up the very real possibility of a disaster of unprecedented magnitude, such is the 'tinderbox' environment in which the tournament is being played.

Zid. Will PM you over this coming week-end.

Math80 ... never a truer word written ref the WC ... there isnt a hope in hell of Cameroon winning tonight , As for the very ordinary Brazil - FIFA simply wont allow the hosts to go out so yes officials to the rescue if it even gets close .. dodgy penalty an offside goal whatever it takes to keep them in the tournament .

Maaka and Earnie there's a whiff of a conspiracy here. After you guys have finished your big paddle around the Indian Ocean looking for you know what, you better head over to Brazil to check these latest theories out.

That's a very good post for your first post in a while mathusala. I had missed what might happen if the hosts depart too early. More than just Sepp Blatter getting a bloody nose.

Looking safe to keep the tinderbox in check,Brazil leading 3-1 after 70 mins. Did look fishy the third goal,Cameroon came out in second half as half the team they were in the first :-k and possibly offside :-k Grease those palms learn from ther LOS way :^o

Woke up in shock today to the news of the group B last placed team Spain's defeat of Australia. Jeees, who would have thought, anyway a lot of the other so called favourites who promised their supporters so much are heading home with tail between the legs.

Well done Aussies, we'll be back in 4 years.

Last nights results.....
Netherlands 2 Chile 0.....Netherlands top the group with 3 wins after a feisty encounter. Two late goals won the game for the Dutch with Chile finishing second to also qualify for the knockout stages.
Australia 0 Spain 3....For 30 minutes Spain were dreadful and an Aussie victory looked possible but they gradually improved and goals from Villa,Torres and Mata won the tie.
Brazil 4 Cameroon 1....Two goals from Neymar eased the hosts to a comfortable victory over Cameroon. The ref was definitely a "homer" but Cameroon were poor as their goal difference of minus -8 suggests.Brazil qualify for the knockout stages as group winners with Mexico second.
Croatia 1 Mexico 3.....All the goals came in the last 20 minutes with Mexico grabbing three before Croatia netted a late consolation.Mexico looked quite good but Croatia had no luck whatsoever.

Tonights/tomorrow mornings games.....
England v Costa Rica 11pm Tuesday night.....England make 9 changes from the side that lost to Uruguay with only Cahill and Sturridge retaining their places.Luke Shaw makes his England debut at the age of 18,so good luck to him.
Italy v Uruguay 11pm Tuesday night....One of these two footballing giants has to follow England through the trapdoor but which one will it be ? Could well be down to the influence on the game of Suarez for Uruguay against Pirlo of Italy.
I think it could well be Uruguay who progress but lets wait for Drunk Monkeys verdict later ! :D
Japan v Colombia 3am Wednesday morning.....both Colombias footballers and its female fans have been amongst the most impressive in the tournament,so far.I expect the Colombians to win this match and send the Japanese out.
Greece v Ivory Coast 3am Wednesday morning....the bearded Greeks are renowned for playing dour football and the Ivory Coast should qualify for the knockout stages at their expense.
Just when I thought our chance had passed, you go and save the best for last.

Nothing wong with Woy. He's English, they play a better formation now than hoofing the long ball. Nobody else out there to replace him with. Not his fault, it's the English Premier League/FA "Malaise" problem. All the skillful footballers are foreigners.

I tend to agree with this assessment, rather than yours Barney:
The sad truth about the Socceroos

............ But can we call this World Cup a success when we lose all our games and concede three goals per match? And when we score three goals, one a penalty, and the other two from Tim Cahill, who at 34, won't be playing another World Cup?..................
