Bugger me, talk about desperate? The Evertoon's probably dream of an OG. Any goal for that matter. They've almost forgotten what the bloody things look like.

To add to Doodoo's reminder about the greatness of hockey compared to soccer is that the NHL, the juniors, seniors and university champions are never settled by penalty shootouts. You play the game until there is a winner. In 1936, it took six overtimes before the Detroit Red Wings scored the winning goal to defeat the Montreal Maroons.
The game began at 8:30 p.m. at the Forum in Montreal, and ended at 2:25 a.m. Mud Bruneteau, a rookie who had been called up two weeks earlier, scored at 16:30 of the sixth overtime, beating Maroon goaltender Lorne Chabot to win the game, 1-0. Detroit goaltender Normie Smith earned the shutout with more than 90 saves.

Probably less to do with any perceived greatness of the sport and more to do with bugger all prime-time television sponsorship and coverage where (over)time is money (lost). Having said that, I had way more fun (and spent less money having it) watching the Houston Aeros than I ever did watching the Rockets, Astro's or Oilers. Television broadcast rights have been the death of second (and third) replays and the reliance on penalty shoot-outs when things get tied in that other great game called footie.

More recently and controversially, it was cited as a reason that the (former) race director 'miscalled' the restart of the final F1 GP race in Abu Dhabi in 2021. If the normal rules had been followed, with 5 laps remaining, the race would have run into 'overtime' and the sponsors and advertisers don't like that. By allowing the slower cars to unlap, the race was reduced to a 1-lap shoot-out with Verstappen on fresh rubber. Stitch up.

You might have liked the Houston Colt 45s, but for the mosquitoes. What about the Rice Owls and the Houston Cougars?

The Colt 45's preceded my tenure but I heard all about the mosquitos at their old woooden stadium. The only time I attended Rice Stadium was for the Houston Dynamo's first home game in the inaugural MLS (well before they moved to their new stadium). Had my fair share of them cougars though.

The Evertons are also boring.
It seemed wrong that such an ugly beast of a game should be decided by a goal so beautiful, so memorable in a match so forgettable. Leandro Trossard’s elegant finish of a quickfire six-man move seemed more than a goal for Arsenal. It felt a statement. It showed that they could break down defiant defensive blocks, that they had the patience, intelligence and precision to score, secure their first win at Goodison Park in six years and rise to fourth in the Premier League.

The first half was so poor and so devoid of entertainment, barring a couple of magnificent Zinchenko passes, that it was easily possible to reflect at length on Everton’s off-field woes without being distracted by any noteworthy events unfolding in the middle. Everton are drifting on and off the pitch.

Wretched leadership has led Everton to a position where they are effectively a distressed asset and are heading into ownership by an American group who have plenty of questions to answer, not least about funds. Some transparency and proper communication with long-suffering supporters would be a start. When the Goodison DJ announced the gate of 39,217 early in the second half, many Everton fans applauded. They are loyal.

Their squad is painfully in need of improving, and it took more than a half an hour before Everton managed a touch in Arsenal’s area. Most of the action was down the other end. Eddie Nketiah and Vieira sent Martinelli down the inside-left channel to place his shot in past Pickford. Arsenal fans celebrated, but Nketiah was shown to be offside by VAR. Everton supporters celebrated. Arsenal fans responded with “you’re going down” and then embarrassed themselves by telling the locals to “sign on”.
