With hindsight, declaring whilst Little Joe was on a hundred & some odd Not Out doesn't seem so clever. Nor does giving 3 of your wickets away with stumpings due to rash charges down the wicket. Perhaps a little less Bazball and a little more Cricket may be advantageous.

So you like the slow and predictable and the tortoise won the first race

That's fine but five days of sell-out fans probably says otherwise.

Along with a wicketkeeper to replace the current backstop, plus I can't see the point in having a four-fingered finger spinner.

And as you suggest, more tortoise and a bit less hare. 👍

The team that played cricket won. The team that played liked millionaires copped their right wack. Feel a bit sorry for Harry Brook and Joe Root having to bat like that when they both are obviously in very good form and capable of making a ship load of runs if allowed to bat properly. All right for players like Stokes and McCullim swing from the arse and occasionally get away with it but let the proper batsmen bat properly.

One down, four to go, anything could happen. Can't see any of the games being a drawn unless the rain really sets in.

Jimmy Anderson 1 - 109 for the game. Broad was great and even the fella with the big gob toiled manfully. Can't see the point of Anderson playing if the sun is out and the wicket is a road. He needs it green and cloudy skies. One trick pony. 8)

Story going around Australia at the moment saying that that an injection of Pfizer killed Shane Warne, who died while he was on holiday in Samui. I reckon they got it half right.

Old mate not happy with the first test deck:

‘I’m done’: Anderson torches first Test pitch

Fox Cricket from Fox Sports
June 23rd, 2023 6:56 am

James Anderson has torched the flat Edgbaston pitch, declaring he is “done” if similar surfaces are produced for the remainder of the series.

England skipper Ben Stokes made it clear before the Ashes that England wanted flat pitches to help execute their ultra-attacking ‘Bazball’ style.

But even he may have been surprised by just how lifeless the first Test pitch was.

Writing in a column for the Telegraph in the UK, Anderson said the track was “like kryptonite for me”.
“There was not much swing, no reverse swing, no seam movement, no bounce and no pace,” he wrote.
“I’ve tried over the years to hone my skills so I can bowl in any conditions but everything I tried made no difference. I felt like I was fighting an uphill battle.
“There was a bit of rustiness but I gave it everything I could. Having played for a long time, I realise you can’t take wickets every game. Sometimes it is not your week. It felt like that for me.
“It’s a long series and hopefully I can contribute at some point, but if all the pitches are like that I’m done in the Ashes series.”

I really hope that the wickets for the rest of the series provide for a contest between bat and ball and that Jimmy gets the pitch and weather conditions he needs to show that he is an all time great.

Best being part of this forum by placing the intellectual challenged on foes list. A lot less post to read and a great time saver.

"As a shot, it was a fairly innocuous cut for four through backward point – nothing like the best one Tammy Beaumont played in her innings of 208 at Trent Bridge. As a moment, on the other hand, it will go down in history. It took her to 192, surpassing the previous highest individual score by an Englishwoman in a Test – Betty Snowball’s 189, struck against New Zealand in February 1935. The record had stood for 32,270 days."

What sort of condition is Pommie cricket in at the moment?

Just finished flogging the delusional Bazballers, and now comfortably disposing of the sheilas.

I suggest the ECB starts checking Oz websites for available coaches. Sadly, Rod Marsh is no longer available.

We are perfectly capable of playing "the aussie way", but that just wouldn't be cricket would it old chap

The sheilas beat the roses.

In other news, the Scots also beat the Omanis.

So last week Bazball was all about making a dry 20-20 style wicket that gave the bowlers nothing and let the batsmen swing from the arse. And this week it's about making a green top and winning the toss and bowling. Win the toss win the test.
Whatever happened to making the best possible wicket and seeing which team has the better cricketers?

Been watching the Essex vs Warwickshire County championship div 1 match live on youtube, which conveniently finished at11pm last night without need for a day 4 meaning the players get an extra day off to watch the test match =D>
Having seen that both sides are pretty even on a flat track, now lets see how good they are on a green strip with a bit of cloud around :-k

I guess Australia won the toss, and batted.

Very smart decision. 👍

Australia would have bowled and England would have been all out for 120. Anderson, Broad and Robinson really did throw pies all day and if Head and Green didn't bazball their wickets away at the end of the day and gift Root two wickets it would have been the perfect day. As it is the door is just slightly still open for the toss winners. Hopefully Smith and Carey both get big 100s and the number 11s get another 150 between them and bat the poms out of the game by the end of day two.

Would you like sage & Onion with that?

Cant expect Jimmy to take wickets when they are conceding tons at the other end. No pressure on batters to score runs off him so they can just play safe.
Think I'm starting to understand Bazbal ............. you give the opposition their 11 batsmen and then a bonus 12th man called extras who gets a minimum half century
