Looked up the term pie eater because I remember it being thrown around years ago and found
Pie-eater
Australian Slang
an Australian; foolish person
or
pie-eater
Person from Wigan.
Nothing to do with the large number of pies eaten in Wigan but to do with a miner's strike in the 1920's when all the pits in WIgan and Leigh went on strike. The Wiganers went back and broke the strike, the "Leythers" continued to strike and got better pay and conditions. Therefore the Wiganer's had to "eat humble pie"... so it's a term of abuse from Leythers to Wiganers. The hostility between the two towns stretches back hundreds of years to the civil war when Wigan was Royalists and Leigh were Parliamentarian and continues to this day.

Just had the best pie ever. It was over stuffed with the best tasting mince plenty of gravy just enough onions and the crust was heavenly. No other pie in Udon comes close to this pie and it costs less then any others available in Udon. It was so good I'm keeping it a secret where I got it, don't want to share with anyone.

I had one of those a couple of days ago, and thought there was a bit too much onion.merchant seaman wrote:Just had the best pie ever. I would have tried the steak and onion also but for the fact that I had just finished breakfast, what stomach? being a non drinker and still doing 10 hours a day on the farm keeps me in shape ,well reasonable shape for my 76 years.mathusalah80 wrote:TWO pies! Great pastry (not to thick) filled to the brim with tasty wagyu beef mince and gravy of perfect consistency , I then tried the steak and mushroom creation, this pie was again full to the brim but of cubes of tender beef in a mushroom gravy.
These two pies were the best I have eaten in S/E Asia and not just Udon Thani.
Pedantic issues like size and weight are not my thing, its a bit like comparing caviar and salmon eggs ,they are both fish but one is so much superior

Asd I have said before price is not the problem, but quality is, I have no doubt Peter the Chef cooks a good pie, I have never said otherwise , I will have to wander along and partake in a pie or two and make an informed decision.

My Market Research seems to indicate that I have to agree with 747 ...... No way I would pay B90 for a pie, even if you chopped up a "gold medal winning prize cow from Bombay" and put that in it

My mate arrives this month from England to Pattaya for his annual 'Piefest' of the 'hairy pie' type - without the hair off course, so I'll try and ascertain where the best outlets are and if there are also 'vertical bacon sandwiches' on offer.
Here's tae us, wha's like us, damn few, and they're a' deid. Mair's the pity!

Aah, the same age as my younger brother! But I do envy the life you describe. =D>
"Pedantic issues like size and weight are not my thing,..."
Interesting philosophy. As a struggling pensioner, if I was offered the choice of a 175gm Steak & Kidney pie @ Bt.90 or another larger 250gm pie of similar quality, at the same price, I would certainly buy the latter, every time. I would interpret that as being sensible, rather than pedantic. Fortunately, for home consumption, I cook all my own pies and puddings, and have convinced myself they are all better, (and certainly cheaper ), than any I could buy. Perhaps we could do a trade Ozzy; some of your fresh home grown vegetables, in exchange for some of my pies.
"... its a bit like comparing caviar and salmon eggs ,they are both fish but one is so much superior"
Very subjective that Ozzy, (as is this ongoing thread regarding which of the locally available pies is "best" ). For example, I consider Salmon far superior to caviar. Over a two year period, when heavily involved in the luxury food business, and in a position to partake of either without cost, I frequently gorged myself on salmon, and never ate even one spoonful of caviar. Thus, I must admit, proving I am just a peasant at heart, lacking class.

I think all this shouting about putting the 'best' meat in pies and mince is a load of nonsense. It goes away from the origins of them .Originally butchers used the lesser cuts from the carcass to make them, many of which though less appetising to look at and possibly not so tender to eat, when prepared and cooked in this way, made a cheap meal for their customers, and enabled them to use all of the carcass.Only a fool would want to chop up prime steak meat to use .That also goes for saying only prime waygu or any other specialised breed meat in them .It is simply not necessary and only adds to the finished cost without any increase in taste, thus defeating the object of a cheapish meal.I make my own cottage pies in a batch for freezing once a month, using the Thai/French beef available, buying 2 kilo for about 250 bht kg. This is enough to make 10 family size pies, which adding on the other items means they cost me less than 70bht each .They are delicious and I assure you they wouldn't taste better if I paid twice as much to use these luxury meats .
Ageing is a privilige denied to many .
