Tesco English Bread

Post by Roy » September 23, 2008, 7:22 pm

The wife went to Tesco today and brought home some rather good bread. It's labeled English Bread and has about 10 very large slices. It is a bit on the expensive side at about 55 baht but as I said the slices are large and very thick compared to Thai bread.
I am not sure how it would compare for someone who has just come over as I think my taste buds have changed, I couldn't eat Thai bread for a long time but now I can, so I would be interested to find out.
But for those of us who have been here a while it certainly gets my thumbs up.

I was in Tesco/Lotus today looking for bread. Didn't see it... Ended up with a wholmeal baguette. It was okay but I'd like some English or IRISH bread... ;)

If the German guy is there next time I will borrow his specs. Could see Uranus with his goggles.

Bottom floor of Big C there is now S&P bakery. Saw "English Bread" there today - very white looking bread (not sure if the same). I bought some wholemeal bread (small pack, thick slice, haven't tried yet) & some "Garlic rolls". They are a bit like garlic bread, with chopped green garlic on the outside & garlic butter in the middle - a very garlic taste indeed. TG says she used to use them (S&P) in Lampang, welcome addition to Udon in my opinion... :D :D

I haven't seen English bread at Lotus yet, but I have seen it at Top's inside Robinson's and at

the new S&P inside the area where Big C is, just a few shops down from Mister Donut.

I am still looking around for Sour Dough bread but no success.

Anyone know where I can buy Sour Dough bread in Udorn?

Kind Regards

The English bread is available in lotus, it is at the Pizza / bakery, after you come through the checkouts.

(where the Bangkok Bank is and the gold shops)

Thanks Ralph... I was looking in the wrong place, thought it was the bakery section near the bikes. If it is near a gold shop I will go alone... :-$ :-$ :-$

Its at the S&P bakery near to the Bangkok Bank in Tescos (S&P also at Big C, as Bob said).
They also do sandwiches,Ham & Cheese,Tuna etc.....not bad to take away....cost 50 baht if I remember correctly.
Just when I thought our chance had passed, you go and save the best for last.

The pizza slices are pretty good as well and their wholemeal bread is good, but doesn't last very long.

Changing the subject but still concerning Tesco. Are we being ripped off?
Like most countries inflation has been rife. Imported products such as English Cheddar cheese, Weetabix and other similar products have shot up in price. But hold on !! The baht has
increased in value up 20% in the same period. I am no economic wiz kid, but surely imported goods should cause the retail price to decrease. Am I wrong or is just another large organization ripping us off???

J have sampled the 'English bread' from Robinsons as well as Big C, but to be honest prefer the wholemeal bread on salke at about 36 odd baht a loaf or the tesco own wholemeal at slightly cheaper,
Put it in the freexzer when needed move to fridge, no problem always tastes nice, fits into the toaster and reasonable price.
The Englsih bread is too large for the toaster, and for what it is, too expensive and the taste does rather depend on who the baker was, I have had good to bloody awful taste wise.

In theory, yes, but in Thailand's case, not necessarily.

Thailand, along with many other countries, is a signatory to the World Customs Organisation (WCO) valuation system. Legally, this means that they (Thai Customs) must accept the declared value of imported goods ie the contract between the seller and the buyer. (There are some clearly defined exceptions to this rule).

However, along with a number of Asian countries, Thailand is renown for setting "reference prices". This means that even though an importer may have bought at TBH10/unit, Thai Customs will determine that their price (for the purposes of declaring a customs value, and therefore the value upon which duty will be paid) is, say TBH15/unit.

You then have a choice of arguing with perhaps the most corrupt Customs organisation in Asia, and seeing your goods held at the wharf for an indeterminate time while it is being sorted out, or just paying up, based on eg 15/unit.

The other matter which may impact on the final price into the shop is the currency in which the contract is set. Is it US$, THB, Euro, etc etc.

S&P bakery is now open in the Charoensri complex and have the usual range of English and wholewheat bread etc. Ground floor between SE-ED and Mister Donut. Also has tables and chairs (only 4 tables) if you fancy a coffee.
