Ground transportation for visitors

Post by hqarang » January 31, 2009, 4:16 am

Was wondering about ground transportation from the airport to town, and then around town. Are taxi's as plentiful as they used to be?

Gad !!! For a second I thought he was talking about Udon's taxi service.

Yes, plenty of taxi's in Bangers. In fact I read somewhere they just lowered the fare 5 baht. 30 baht instead of 35 baht when the flag drops.

I wish Udon had taxi service like Bangkok.

I've used a private Thai man in BKK for 4/5 years now. He's a straight shooter, no drink, always punctual.
Will be waiting for you with your name sign outside baggage, will help you with accommodations in advance or drive you around in the area you're interested in to find best location hotel.
Will pick you up next morning at hotel and take you where you'd like to go, etc...
Has associate private drivers for longer hauls like Pattaya, etc... Pretty cool cat, treats you right, & professional about it.
Has a medium size Toyota, so so car for around BKK.
Will charge a bit more than Taxis, but provides personal service including waiting outside baggage with your name sign which eliminates hassle getting out of Airport, etc...
He's been in the biz for many years...family lives in Udon.

I've just called him to ok posting his name and number.

hqarang, were you wondering about taxi service in Udorn? Used to be a couple hundred (it seemed) around town and at the air base but no longer. Ground transport bus from airport to some hotels (Charoensri Grand, Charoen, etc.) is free. Or you can find transportation at a counter to the right just before you leave the terminal. Car/motorbike rentals are available. Lek's Car Hire has a good reputation here and think they will provide a driver, if needed. Also some others at the airport (Mali's, Hertz, etc.).

Getting around town isn't too bad with saeng taews (baht buses), buses, tuk tuks, motorcycle taxis and even some sam lors still in business. If you drove in Thailand previously, then you can probably handle renting a motorbike or a car. If you plan to drive then probably a good idea to get an international driver license from your local AAA before you come over here, it's easy enough to do.

I guess I didn't make myself very clear--I was referring to taxi's in Udon, especially from the airport into town. We are staying at the Ban Chiang, and didn't see anything on their web site about airport pickup.

Thanks, docta, on the info for the private driver in BKK. I'll keep his number handy.

Hqarang,

There is still no organised taxi service from Udon Thani "International" Airport. Like an air conditioned car, with a wheel in each corner. It's a disgrace.
You either have to use one of the hotel minivans that have drivers with signs, and will take you to their repective hotels, where upon checking in you'll be clobbered for the expensive rack rate, unless you booked via the internet and got a online rate.

You can pre book a pick up, if you know the number of someone who provides such a service.

If your lucky you might see a ancient looking three wheeled contraption, straight out of the "Flintstones" that has the speed of an old British Diary Milkfloat, who is dropping someone off.

No taxis in Udon. I believe that Tuk Tuks are not officially allowed to go onto the airport grounds to await for potential customers. But as Prenders says you might be lucky catching one that is dropping off a leaver.
As PH said there is a mini bus that goes around town dropping off passengers.
Or you can find transportation at a counter to the right just before you leave the terminal.

Just to correct above - the price is still 35 baht flag down in Bangkok but you now only travel 1km for that price instead of the 2km previously - nothing ever goes down in price.
