There is an abundance of car rental places in Udon these days, including Justin's Aussie Bar.
Good luck.
Perhaps, if you telephoned this hotel: http://www.amari.com/loeipalace/ they might be able to refer you somewhere.but really i would rather get one from loei if possible, just cant find any there.
Good luck.

How are you planning to get to Loei Steve..?.....its a peice of p!$$ to drive, think loei palace (Hotel) will hook you up with a rental van (With Driver) for a tour or something, and a few other hotels will have a man to hand with transport... but wouldn't of thought there would be enough (If any)customers for a self drive rental buisness in Loei.

When i was Loei Palace Hotel, asked at reception and got car that day. 1200 baht a day i believe all in. I think it was a friend of receptionist's car, adequate but no frills or fancy! The car owners girlfriend brought it and she spoke good English though my Thai speaking girl friend was there for any misunderstandings. There wasn't much paperwork! Roads around Loei nice and quiet, lovely place to drive if you don't want/need driver, and i'm sure hotel would always be able to get you a car if required.

I just looked at the Loei Palace Hotel website. They're offering a "Special Room Rate" starting at 800 baht per night, good until 31/10/09. Good price for an Amari Hotel.

In the event of accident/stolen/damage/breakdown hope everything would be plane sailing. The car owners girlfriend brought it and she spoke good English though my Thai speaking girl friend was there for any misunderstandings. There wasn't much paperwork!

Its not a hive of entertainment in the evenings(it was not a while back anyway) but still a drink to be found with resturants at hand,Lee mentioned a Disco if you fancy strutting your stuff and getting down checking a groove or two...well Thai muzak anyways.lol ....a lovely peaceful and clean place, traffic goes very slow through town which is a nice change, air is cleaner too, did look at the palace but too pang..
have a read here..a bit out of date wouldn't think much has changed.
