Remember if you go to Big C from Rom Yen 3 you now have to set out 3 days early, because of the Big C intersection detours. From the ring road, you have to first turn east as far as Cafe Amazon, about 1.3 kms, then a dog leg back again to the intersection again followed by another dog leg 50 ms towards the Kon Kaen road, with queues at every U -turn. Oh yes, then when you come out of Big C you have to go into town as far as St Mary's before you can U-turn.

I'm not sure what will happen when the flyover is complete, because the speeding traffic will then be coming off the elevated section somewhere before St Mary's school, and the lanes will be in the middle of the road, (coming and going). So I don't what will happen with the U-turns and school crossings in that vicinity.

Did the congestion in this area really get bad enough to justify the flyover being built??

Or is it just a case of adding a shortcut to the route?

I tend to think there would be more traffic going left to right around the ring road than there is coming in on the Sakon Nakon road.

The other point is that Ok the flyover will whisk the traffic over the ring road, and past Big C, then it will all bottle up, as it does now, at and after the next traffic lights where Soi Nong Bua joins Phosi road, and Phosi road starts to narrow down.

Big C flyover and traffic management in Udon

Post by FrazeeDK » March 23, 2006, 8:09 pm

until they get rid of the large fresh markets within the ring road, the traffic will always be atrocious, particularly with the Tald by the railroad tracks. Double parked, triple parked, busses stopping.. a nightmare indeed..
Same-o on the road going north inside the ring road.. The Talad about 2km inside the ring road contributes to horrific traffic problems..
My speculation... eventually the government (or "business interests)will force these large fresh markets to move elsewhere. See the Talad Chaiyo 3 km past the ring road on the Sakohn Nakhon road. It was built 4 years ago and is still sitting empty.. Very large, big roads, lots of potential parking.. Whichever Thai businessman bought the land did so for a long-term reason.. Actually, it would make sense to move them merely for health and road safety reasons..

Not particularly Sean, but its a horrendous accident blackspot. I've seen 2 dead motorcyclists sprawled on the road there now in the last year, plus multiple T-Boned vehicles, injuries unknown..and I am only there 50% of the time. It seems to be the Big C entrance with the waiting vehicles that causes this, but I am not sure.

As pointed out elsewhere, whether dropping the inbound traffic right next to St Marys school will stop this, or just move the problem somewhere else is another matter. At about 4:00 in the afternoon that particular spot needs a great deal of care.... and there are Thai drivers about

Hmm, I think that does give some kind of justification to things then John...

Lets hope it does cure the problem.

Well I would agree if the flyover was on the ring road. Think this is just a bigger problem. Some of us will see, maybe in six + months. I hope to be moved by then, and I only go to Big C for a couple of things, every blue moon. 8)

As i drove from Big C down to the Ek Udon today i was comfronted by a huge hole in the road(20 feet by 20 feet and i could not see the bottom) which a kind bus driver was trying to edge me into.Pedestrians are protected by a couple of small poles and a few yards of tape .It was round about the area of the Chinese arch, not far from the Ek Udon and reminded me of subway contruction in the UK.What is it in relation too? Some new Udon mega project?
