Has anyone flown out of Vientianne to any destinations in Asia? I don't think one would save any money what with visa at the bridge, departure tax, and visa again upon arrival back in Vientianne versus flying to Bkk and then on, say to Hanoi. But, maybe there would be less hassle and time involved? To give an example. The last time I went to Phnom Penh, I was still living in Jomtien. The taxi picked me up at my condo at 9am, I was finally checking into my hotel at 4pm. All this for a 55 minute plane ride.
Where is the airport in Vientianne, how long a drive is it from the bridge to the airport, what is the taxi cost & departure tax?
I looked at Lao Airlines website, they go to a few destinations in China, Vietnam, and Cambodia. What other airlines service Vientianne Airport?
Flying out of Vientianne to S.E. Asian Destination vs. Bkk?
I have flown out of the airport to incountry destinations and to Hanoi. This was a few years back but did with no problem.
I was in Laos last weekend and thought to get the airfare to Kumming and Hanoi. This info is less than a week old. The below include taxes.
1. Kumming $242 RT
2. Hanoi $230
They will help you arrange visa to either also. I looked in the Bangkok Post and from what I can find it is worth paying the Laos Visa fee both way and will still save about 1/2 the fare and going to Bangkok.
The best way to get to Vientien is ride the Udon/Vientien bus. It is B80 each way. and quite pleasant. If you go tothe bridge you pay to cross and then it is B200 to get to town.
The place that gave me these fares is Leego Air Service Enterprise.

These are the bits I can help with:-
The visa fee upon arriving in Laos is $30, which as you mention you would get caught for both ways.
The airport I know is on the far side of Ventiane, - i.e. furthest from the bridge. I would guess about 5kms out. Taxis would no doubt take you there from the bridge, but at a higher cost. I'd guess 400-500 baht. I would allow about 45 minutes from the bridge to the airport, (30 minutes bridge to Ventiane city centre)
I know that Laos Aviation and Bangkok Airways fly to Ventiane from Bangkok. The Thai departure tax then would be 500 baht.
