I took a local bus from Pai to Mae Hong Son last December. The road was fine but very winding. The scenery is spectacular.

The Michelin map of Thailand appears to be in the process of being re-issued in a 2006 edition. It's listed on Amazon as coming:

However, if you really need something now the 2003 version seems to be still available:

Another interesting one to be available soon....according to Amazon, is a map by Globetrotter of just the NE of Thailand:

There are more selections on the US Amazon site than the Cnd one (and I'm sure the UK one also) that warranted an order from both the US and Cnd sites on my part. Tried to order something online from AsiaBooks in Bangkok.....no reply from them yet! I guess 350 baht purchases don't turn their crank.

Hopefully some of these orders has to turn up something that is better than what I saw on sale in Thailand at 7-Eleven !

There is an interesting review of the Michelin Map in amazon.co.uk website, and my own experiences concur with this. The Michelin Map is not accurate (and certainly not up to their european reputation). Unfortunately I can not suggest an alternative. I was given a new Toyota road atlas by the Udon Toyota agent, and the accuracy can be judged by the fact that the Udon Toyata Agent's location is in the wrong part of town!

The book shop in the food court at tesco has a good alternative to the Michelin map. I think reduced to 200 baht.
