I've got the answer, at least as far as Udon is concerned. They wouldn't let me renew it 1 day before expiry, so have to go back again tomorrow.
Though to look on the positive side, at least I got the paperwork checked through and I think he has the mindset that he will be do it tomorrow without let or hindrance!!

Interesting point about renewal of first five year license Ray. Apparently it does apply to us as well. But!! It is until death or your 70th birthday anniversary. Which ever is first. I will be 74 when mine expires, if I don't first
When asked about my circumstances replied" No can do" Which I think meant you cannot hold a driving license after you are 70. I resisted getting further clarification as he might have noticed I am over that now. Any over 70's still driving on here

Car and Motorcycle License
Well, it took the better parts of three days but I got my one year car and five year motorcycle licenses yesterday!
It takes lots of patience and a cool heart/jai yen (GRRrrrr) but it was worth it. Most people could probably get it all done in two days. Just be sure to follow the instructions in this thread by Ray and others.
After you get the letter from Immigration, go early in the morning to the Land Transport building just past Nong Soong WITH a Thai, preferably, since all signs are in Thai. The car license part was easy, just a lot of waiting. Since I never had a motorcycle license in the USA, I had to take a 30 question test on a computer (in English) and a road test on their little course on the grounds. If you don't have a motorbike, no worry. They will rent a little Honda 100cc for the test to you for 30 baht. Both tests were easy, just common sense like anyplace else in the world.
As stated earlier, there is a copy machine service available in the lobby and a booth in the parking lot that will take your picture and laminate your documents for a very reasonable fee.
