London gives Uber the boot
Company must 'play by the rules', says mayor

WRITER: THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

LONDON: London's transport authority said on Friday that it would not renew Uber's licence to operate in the British capital, arguing that it demonstrates a lack of corporate responsibility with implications for public safety and security.

Transport for London said the ride-hailing application was not "fit and proper to hold a private hire operator licence".

It cited its approach to handling serious criminal offences and its use of software to block regulatory bodies from gaining full access to the app, preventing "officials from undertaking regulatory or law enforcement duties".

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said he supported the decision, saying that any operator of taxi services in the city "needs to play by the rules".

He said that "providing an innovative service must not be at the expense of customer safety and security".

Uber, which has been criticised for management misbehaviour and rule-breaking and has feuded with regulators all over the world, shot back quickly in response. In a statement, the US-based company said the decision by London regulators would "show the world that, far from being open, London is closed to innovative companies".

John Colley, a strategy professor at Warwick Business School, said poor values ultimately bring companies down. Uber is now effectively banned from France, Spain and Belgium -- together with facing litigation and investigation around the world, he said.

"There is a very long list of businesses who have suffered for failing to uphold the level of values necessary," Colley said. "Until Uber gets this message then it will suffer lost trade as a result of its deteriorating reputation."

Uber, which has an estimated 3.5 million registered users and 40,000 drivers in London, can appeal within 21 days.

I guess that's what happens when a smart-ass ride hailing company with dubious history decides to challenge a major city's requirements for registered drivers to pass an English test, both reading & writing. Maybe they should focus on bits of Bradford and certain parts of Rotherham where public safety in the Asian ghettos is already compromised?

Of course their typical 'shoot the messenger' corporate public response will go down well with Toyota, a Saudi sovereign wealth fund and a major Chinese backer who have collectively poured billions into the (misad)venture. Why on earth was that "press release" allowed to go out when the current CEO's personal massage to Uber employees was as follows?

Uber chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi wrote to staff on Friday confirming that the company would appeal the ruling. He said he disagreed with the decision but it was based on past behaviour.

“The truth is that there is a high cost to a bad reputation,” he wrote. “It really matters what people think of us, especially in a global business like ours.

“It’s critical that we act with integrity in everything we do, and learn how to be a better partner to every city we operate in. That doesn’t mean abandoning our principles—we will vigorously appeal TfL’s decision—but rather building trust through our actions and our behavior. In doing so, we will show that Uber is not just a really great product, but a really great company that is meaningfully contributing to society, beyond its business and its bottom line."

Meanwhile In The Netherlands...............THE HAGUE, Netherlands — An appeals court has upheld the Dutch government’s ban on a former Uber ride-hailing service in the Netherlands.

The College of Appeal for Businesses ruled Thursday that the government was justified in imposing penalty payments linked to its ban on UberPop. The service was banned in 2014 because it enabled drivers without a taxi license to pick up passengers.

Uber halted the service in 2015 in the Netherlands. It operates other services in Dutch cities using licensed drivers. Other countries, including France and Germany, also have banned UberPop.

In the same ruling, the court upheld Uber’s appeal against a penalty payment of 650,000 euros ($775,000) linked to another of the company’s services, UberX.

The company says in a statement that it welcomes that decision.

Really?! I assume that you are from Yorkshire Tam. If so, maybe you will agree that you would feel more threatened in the sink estates around Gipton :D
