New (used) Car, how to register?

Hi people,

I've bought a new 19 year old Ford SUV.
We bought in Bangkok as second hand car market is better internet oriented there.
Alternative would be to hop 50 or so small dealers who don't show pricing and as soon as they see farang...
Absurd pricing 555.

Anyway.
It has some nuisances due carelessness from mechanic.
That's fixed now, and it needs to get registered and insurance.

My wife is sure we need to do it at the transport office in Udon Thani, an 75km, 2 hour drive just to get there.
(We live about 30min out of Phen, middle of rice fields)

I've been there with the first car we bought.
Hours and hours waiting in a queue.
Some "technical guys" looking like a monkey looks at a broken watch, no clue what their actual technical knowledge is...
Bu they take their time to "inspect".
Then the next wait begins, hours for some simple papers.

Somehow I find it hard to believe that all people who buy a car in Udon Thani province all need to go to this office.

The queue is long, not that long.
Mostly long because they take like 30 minutes per car to "inspect", and probably the same for paperwork...
With 20 cars, that is a full day 555.

And I doubt that there are like just 300 cars per week sold in whole Udon Thani province.

So...
While the missus obviously is always right, I wonder if there is a more time and distance efficient way to do this??

Does it need to cost me a whole day and 150km drive to get the car on my name?

That would be sad....
If needed, sure.

Phen does have transport office, and we did visit there for technical inspection a few times.

Apparently that's not possible to use for new licence plates?
(As the car is from different province)

Anyone who can explain to me how the normal process goes?

We will try the 20th.
Need to be in. Udon Thani anyway for immigration, better make it a combination.

Not today. The office just had 3 days holiday due Asalha Puja days

Your wife is correct, about 18km's from Udon towards Khon Kaen, no way around it, get there early and suck it up...

Leave around 6am, and just do the tour.
Sigh.

We are planning on installation of LPG system.
I guess I better prepare a full day for that change at the transport office as well

I thought you could do everything vehicle related at Nong Han transport office. I know several people who use it for licences and normally yearly vehicle tax. I'm sure they also do the inspections. But I don't know about vehicles bought from other provinces.
Anyone have first hand knowledge?

Change of province can only bew done at the main branch of DLT. You can ask the inspection shops to do for you with as fee.
Change to LPG needs to be registered in blue book.

Nong Han TO had a cue of cars being inspected last week while I was there renewing DL
So possible 2nd office to visit
Would not be any closer than the other office though

Its a straight forward procedure. Nothing complicated.

Not my best quality, waiting at burocracy.
After 3 hours or so I'm getting grumpy.

Where possible I try to avoid the long waits that seem to be "standard" in Thailand.

When not possible... Just sit and wait

I use the Nong Han office for all my stuff , they do everything .. Change of province registrations , DL renewals , Car inspections registering vehicle modifications etc ..carryboy , conversions to shockers n suspension ...everything the KK highway big office do.. only IMO Nong Han is quicker and easier , less hassle less people.

A lot of us use wives, friends, agents and other intermediaries to do the hard work of sitting on one's arse in an office whenever possible.
