At a rough guess about 200km...I'd suggest rent a car and drive...its near enough the same as driving in England...just a lot slower and a "Tad" more hazardous!

252 kms, should be able to average 80 kms an hour and use care, lots of irresponsible passing on that road, keep an eye on your shoulder as you may be using it a lot.

The roads are not bad at all, but not four lanes all the way, use some patience and you should be fine. Alhtough it takes longer I prefer the road along the river from Nong Khai a lot less commercial trucks and a lot prettier. Just really an easier drive maybe two hours longer but worth it.

also looked it up in map, although i have driven it a couple times. sometimes you can do 120, then back to 60 while waiting to pass busses or trucks. use caution and keep your eye on your shoulder, as you may need it. lots of irresposible passing going on, decent drive, keep you wits about you. nice lazy river town.

I plan to do some touring around the north east area of Isaan on rented motor bike. A few short day trips, Bandung for example. Then 4 or 5 day trip via Sakon Nakhon and Nakhon Phanom, then up the mekhong river road thru Ban Phaeng, Bung Khla and down to Nong Khai.

Is there overnight accomodation, nothing flash, between Nakhon Phanom and Nong Khai? Preferably on or near the river. Will have the TGF with me so language should not be a problem. Any attractions of note along this route?

Doing this trip in late november so weather should be good then. Back in Udon in time for the monthly forum gathering to meet some of the local forumites. Will december 1st be correct date for this? I have been to the night markets before so no problems there.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.. 8)

Thanks.
John
