Trip Report Udon to Cheltenham & back

Post by BobHelm » January 11, 2008, 2:09 pm

Well was my first visit to 'Swampy' so some thoughts on that first.
I was quite impressed with the area before check in. Seats everywhere & plenty of variety of food & shops. I wondered what all the fuss was about but then I got through check in..... duty free mighty expensive (ciggies 570 baht for 200 - I can buy for 620 in 7/11) A small bottle of Hiney 180 baht. Hardly any seats ..... stay out of there for as long as possible is my opinion... :( .
My friends in immigration  at NK had given me a visa extension until 26th. December. My flight actually was scheduled for 2.55 a.m. on 27th. In theory the booking would open at 11.55 on the 26th. 5 minutes to get booked in & infront of immigration??? not a chance. So I was expecting to pay a 500 baht fine for about 15 minutes of overstay :( but, although my exit stamp is the 27th. no request for cash which did lighten my mood until I got into duty free.
Flights back to UK on Kuwait airways no problem, food OK (better than many) but neither video screen worked & certainly a alcohol free 16 hours.
Flight back to Kuwait city same as above....then....flight to Bangkok should have taken off at 10.55 p.m. on the 8th - getting me into Bangkok at just before 11a.m. on the 9th. with plenty of time to catch the Air Asia flight to Udon. Flight delayed to 8 a.m. on the 9th..... :( :(
In fairness to Kuwait they did bus us into the city & put us up for the night in the Sheridan with an evening meal & breakfast thrown in, but it was 1 a.m. by the time I got there, with a 4.45 wake up call to get back to catch the flight - so not much sleep time.
Plane eventually took of at 10 a.m. & so arrived BKK at 8 in the evening - so a night in BKK (not my favourite place) & a new air ticket purchased in the morning (Air Asia - no refund, up to you to sort out with Kuwait).
So letter of complaint to Kuwait this morning - will see what that brings....

yes the seat situation after pissport control is ridiculous, i could see around 30 seats in groups of 4/5 a few more near to the last security checkpoint though and a TV..... i guess they want you to wander round the shops and make purchases or sit and eat/drink in the food places.
Can You Dig It Dug.?

Did the journey back to Cheltenham the other week from BKK on the Eva BR67 direct to Thiefrow. Got free use of the Eva lounge, had a few beers and sarnies. Flight OK, throat like it had been sandpapered about 3 hrs into flight. Arrived into Thiefrow 20 mins early, no Queues at passport control and baggage just going round the carousel as I walked upto it..Walked to Terminal 2 bus station, saw bus for Cheltenham asked driver if i could get on as I had ticket for next bus. He let me on the bus, arrived in Cheltenham at 21.50 walked to the bus stop for the local bus. was home for 22.20. By 22.30 was drinking black coffee. No milk :(

I was looking at flying Kuwait next time to the swamp, I think I might try and go with Eva instead currently only £30 in it

Next time you are in Cheltenham give I'll buy you a beer!

Happy to take you up on that (at three quid a pint :D ).
Hopefully ( :?: ) will be another 15 month b4 I return - lottery win or family crises excepted.

I used Kuwait because it was just sooo much cheaper than anyone else around Christmas. Would I use again???? Ummm I think that depends on their reply to my email.... :D :D

I like EVA, but the BKK-LHR leg is a day flight, which I don't like so much.

How come you got to use the EVA lounge fussychunk? Were you in the Premium Laurel class? :D

Well I have had a reply from Kuwait - about what I expected, but I haven't given up yet & have replied to them...:D
This has reference to your email regarding your flight KU411 from Kuwait to Bangkok on 08th January 2008.

We appreciate your taking time to write to us about your concerns our company encourages customers to express their observation and comments, without which we would not be able to gauge our efficiency and areas of improvement. While addressing the delay that occurred on your flight, the reason for the delay was not anticipated and is beyond the airline control. It is worth while mentioning that mechanical/technical or weather related delays are not eligible for compensation, whereas, the airline takes necessary steps to minimize the inconvenience by alternate flight scheduling, providing food, and hotel accommodations... Etc, as and when required, which we believe you were provided with Kuwait airways. According to the conditions of ticket contract, schedules are subject to change without prior notice in case of necessity. For your information, the airline’s primary aim is to transport the passenger to the final destination safely with the maximum comforts and convenience.

We are mindful of the great inconvenience on your part; however, to have your understanding of your position would be most gratifying. We hope to serve you better next time on your futures flights with us.

Sincerely,

Might be worth looking at this site on complaining to the airline, it says to me that when you bought the ticket that you entered a contract with them, you agreed to the contract by turning up, and sober, they did not fully honour thier side of the contract.

If ur flight departed from UK and its delayed more than 2 hours, ur entitled to compensation according to EU regulations and this sign is at check in counters.

Cant remember the link or sites name, but it might assist

Im sure it can be retrospectively applied to you, particularly that you already have the letter from Kuwait Airlines etc...

Thanks Wazza but the flight that originated in the EU was fine. It was the next flight - Kuwait City - BKK that was the problem so I guess I am not covered... :(

Fussychuck, thanks for the links - that will be my next port of call if I get a zero response from my last e-mail... yeah I agree about English liking to complain... :D we are talking peanuts here (less than 3,000 baht if they covered my extra expenses 100%) but it is a principal thing... :D :D
