THAI to raise fuel surcharge on Asian routes

Thai Airways International Plc Tuesday announced that it plans to raise fuel surcharges on Asian flights next month to offset rising jet fuel costs.

Effective September 1, the surcharge from Bangkok to Singapore will rise from US$15 to US$20, and from US$14 to US$22 for Bangkok to Penang, Malaysia.

Fuel surcharges on other international flights may also have to be increase as well, the airline official added.

However, the airline currently has no plan to raise fuel surcharges on domestic flights.

It was inevitable I suppose, even the local somtiels have increased fares by 20% recently. The funniest though was last week when a pedal samlor tried to charge me extra "because of rising fuel costs" I paid it for the laugh i got.

Samlor driver with a great sense of humor.
Then again, his reasoning wasn't far off the mark. All of the samlor guy's other living expenses are, doubtless, also affected by fuel prices so it made sense to him to try to raise his own prices.

Yeah, I would've paid it, too.

Well, if it's Tiger Airlines, it's not reflected in their website. I just looked.

If and when this does come to pass, it will be interesting to see how it is resourced by Immigration. They seem to be pretty short on the ground locally already.

They'll surely have to bring in additional resources, otherwise they will be very stretched if they have to cover it from Nong Khai/Udon.

We don't want them getting hot under the collar when we go to renew our visas! :x

It is only three turn straight round flights so it shouldn't place too much burden on them, but TIT

on again, off again, back on, maybe.
Udon Thani now ready for foreign flights
BOONSONG KOSITCHOTETHANA

Udon Thani airport is ready to receive its first international flights now that it has put in place an online passenger screening system.

The Immigration Bureau's delay in installing the system, to identify known terrorists, drug traffickers and criminals, had forced Tiger Airways to put off the launch of Singapore-Udon Thani flights beyond its schedule of July 1.

The province had set a side a special budget of 200,000 baht for the Bureau to install the system, to overcome the constraints that otherwise would have prevented the airport from receiving passengers from direct international flights.

The Bureau has agreed to the use of a system adopted by Thailand's Office of the Narcotics Control Board until the US government system is available later this year.

''We are ready to welcome direct international flights to the province,'' Udon Thani airport director Rewat Panmongkol confirmed yesterday.

The northeastern province has been eager to link directly to international air travel through scheduled commercial flights to give its economy and tourism a boost.

Only three Thai airlines _ Thai Airways International, Nok Air and Thai AirAsia _ currently operate domestic flights to and from Udon Thani airport.

Tiger Airways, the budget carrier affiliated with Singapore Airlines, has yet to set a new launch date for three direct flights a week from Singapore to Udon Thani, on 180-seat twin-jet A320 aircraft.

Although Tiger Airways had previously indicated that it could start the service in January next year, Mr Rewat expected it to commence earlier with the knowledge that the facilities at Udon Thani airport were ready.

Meanwhile, it is now confirmed that SilkAir, a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, will begin five charter flights directly from Singapore to Udon Thani on board A320s, also with 180 seats, in December this year.

Thailand's Department of Civil Aviation, which owns and runs the Udon Thani airport, formerly a US Air Force base during the Vietnam War, has given SilkAir a green light to fly to Udon Thani.Mr Rewat said authorities were considering the possibility of reducing landing and navigation fees to further encourage Tiger Airways to fly to Udon Thani.

Meanwhile, provincial authorities will soon propose to Thai AirAsia, the low-cost carrier, that some of its Bangkok-Hanoi flights, now twice a day, stop over at Udon Thani, to provide another international air link for the province.

''We would like to see Thai AirAsia make stop-overs on weekends,'' said the Udon Thani airport chief, noting that traffic potential on the route included Vietnamese tourists and Thais of Vietnamese origin living in Thailand's northeastern region.

Guess a day is a long time here in Thailand so the meeting 5 days ago between the provincial Governor and the CEO of Tiger Airways last week to discuss this, which concluded with both parties saying a date could not be fixed for commencement of service, but the CEO, when pressed by reporters replied "It is not definite but I agree with what has already been said, they will most likely start before the new year.
The Governor promised to divert funds totalling 200,00bht from another project to enable immigration to complete its arrangements for this target date.
So is the Bangkok Post, new news or a late and misrepresented report of last weeks meeting?

Did you spot this bit, from LA's quote from the Bangkok Post:-
Meanwhile, it is now confirmed that SilkAir, a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, will begin five charter flights directly from Singapore to Udon Thani on board A320s, also with 180 seats, in December this year.
It looks like Silk Air may be getting in first, before Tiger Airways!

Also, this bit:-

Can't be bad, more choice for the customer! :D

Silk Air is also a subsidary of Singapore Airlines the same as Tiger Air.However unlike Tiger they do not offer flights for sale. They are completely a holiday package company The seat comes with a whole deal including hotel, local tours etc. My last check on their offers were, Bangkok, 3 nights all inclusive, 12,000bht x2 , no single supplement.Unless you have a romantic liason in mind, don't think of interest to travellers to Singapore.
I think they are only on offer for flights originating from Singapore anyway
