Bad luck

Post by kakariki » February 2, 2007, 1:57 pm

Hi
I just got caught with this one, I checked availability from Melb - Singapore and connecting Singapore - Udon Thani and all ok, so I book Sin - Udon for family and I and then try to book Mel - Sin, in 10 minutes flights gone and cannot get to Singapore, then Tiger tell me back luck, I cannot get refund on flight I booked 15 minutes earlier because Mel - Sin with Singapore Airlines and out of control even though they do booking.
Sorry too much. :(

Well the pros and cons of transiting through Singapore rather than Bangkok. The pitfalls of the two airports in Bk are well documented so will just concentrate on Udon-Singapore. Firstly the cost is very little different, but watch out for departure tax, the Tiger invoice says inc all taxes, but the check in staff said no at Udon and charged an additional 400bht each. However Singapore tax was included. Have a cup of coffee and a snack before departure, unless you don't mind paying over 100bht for luke warm Nescafe on board, likewise duty free, wait till you get to destination, better selection and cheaper. Now the big problem for me was the luggage allowance. As I was going onward on an international connection I knew my bag would be over the 15kg allowed by Tiger so I booked a luggage upgrade to 20kg, payable in advance at a special rate of 700bht return. Imagine my surprise to be charged a further 200bht a kilo when my bag weighed 22kgs. The same on my return but 8$Sing per kilo. Absolutely no marginal allowance is made.
I was informed this is strict Tiger Air policy.Obviously a distinct disadvantage to a family traveling, unless of course you think the flight price outweighs this. With the limited days and times of travel it can mean a long, long wait in Singapore for the onward connection. Not really bad news as its a lovely aiport with plenty of time consuming things to do.
The Udon flight arrives and departs from the new Budget terminal in Singapore. If your onward journey involves going to Terminal 1 , as most do, its a bus to terminal 2, sky train to terminal 1, both free but inconvenient lugging luggage. So you pays your money and takes your choice. #-o

Tiger Airlines today announced they are setting up their Australian head office at Tullamarine airport, Melbourne. Initially they are introducing cut-price domestic fares to compete with Jetstar and Virgin Blue, but hopefully it won't be too long before us Melbourneans will be able to fly cheaply to Udon from Melbourne via Singapore.

Yes, hooray for Tiger coming down to Melb. I'm just hoping flight times work out better than current Thai Air times - waiting at BKK airport for hours for the next flight to Udon isn't too good! Can't wait to get back to Udon!!

A major reason for our interest in Tiger to Udon is that we are thinking to fly our wonderful old (11YO) standard poodle to Udon, but we are not prepared to do so while the 2 airports and long Thai Airways flight connection times are occurring in Bangkok. Hopefully the smooth and less traumatic transport of our family member to Udon might become possible by Tiger via Singapore.

Does anyone have information on the fares that will be available on Tiger from Udon to Singapore in the middle to the end of August? I guess that reasonable rate mentioned above is over.

Thank you.

Fares can be different for every day. Only way to find out is to pick a date, and look here:

Wow! These are some pretty amazing fares even if it is before taxes and all that. Thanks for the link. It might be worth taking a short trip to Singapore and K.L.
