If you are refering to FAR's as Federal Aviation Regulations - then I will take issue with you on that statement. As long as I am not an a US bound flight or a US based carrier the FAA can't do squat to me. The regulations that govern the airline that I am flying are the only ones that I need to follow.

I flew BKK -Udon yesterday with air asia. Was charged 426 baht for 5kg overweight for checked baggage but my carry on luggage was 13.5 kg. No checks on carry on luggage weight were evident.

Doc, Most airlines in the world and especially the one that are permitted to land in the US, have adapted rules that mimic the FAR's and in-fact some foreign carriers have rules that more stringent. You seem to have missed the point in that the FAR's are Rules not laws. A few years back there was a guy that took a lawn chair to something like 10,000' in controlled airspace. The FAA took him to task (not sure about court) for violating the FAR's. Since he didn't have a pilots license there was very little that FAA could do. I think the incidence went away with slap on the wrist fine but not sure.

Just one more point the rules and laws do tend to overlap.

Jetdoc - no dispute that rules and laws do over lap.

The point was that complaining to the FAA about an incident that takes place on a foreign based airline is an exercise in futility - even if you are an American citizen. The FAA has absolutely no jurisdiction over any airline that is not in US Airspace and is not based in the US.

I've seem to recall that golf clubs are given a free pass; not included in the baggage weight. Can anyone confirm this?

Doc, my post "Don't get confused the FAR's are not laws. Can you be prosecuted under the law for violating a FAR---you bet your sweet bibby;o)"

Please enlighten me as to how this statement suggests that one can one can be held accountable for misbehaving while onboard a foreign carrier in foreign airspace. BTW are you perchance related to Shawn?
