Jump the Queue - leaving Central Mall !!!

Post by rct » February 17, 2013, 5:21 pm

jump the queue (British & Australian) first definition I found on the internet:

to move in front of people who have been waiting longer for something than you. If you try to jump the queue at a bus stop you'll get shouted at by old ladies.

*****
Yes, I am the nut honking my horn at the farang driving the Mistubishi Pajero (older eg around 2006), and the Hyundai van, who tried to jump the queue of dozens of cars waiting patiently in line to turn left at the exit of the Mall. These cars thought it was clever to take the right lane and shoot ahead, intended for cars that will turn right into the junction, and then "jump the queue".

Sorry I was not in the mood today to let you do it to me, for many many good reasons, care to hear them? The point is, I wait my turn, so should you, your reasons to hurry ahead are of no interest to me, unless your wife in the car is rushing to give birth, in which case, you would have turned right anway to go to the hospital !!!

Have a nice day. ;)

Queue jumping is most prevalent in the bank IMO ..... take a number and wait ..could it be easier except for the people who walk straight in and dont bother going directly over to the cashier and wanting immediate service ... very very annoying for those patiently waiting ..tho Thais will not say or make an issue of it Mash certainly does ,,, its called bank rage ... i hate going into any bank due to the possibility of it happening ....

Its not the Queue jumps faulty(I will explain later) Its is the person behind the counter who answers them
I was recently in Dubai after a 6 hour flight and at the Hotel after being interuppted 4 times I told the person behind the counter not to offer assistance to anyone else except me until we were done.

Tizz my experience that in Thai banks the people who just stroll in and dont bother queuing are more than often well known to the cashiers ,, regular same branch users who will ot be told to take a number ,,, ive lost count how many times this has happened to me the most annoying case ws in the Sian comm bank where a fella actually came ove my right shoulder as i was being served and demanded he was served fist ,, nor knowing i understand Thai i told him what i thought in no uncertain terms ,, the cashier was mortified that i would actaully as this man to take a number and wait like every one else had to .....

Having lived in Beijing for a number years, you quickly learned to recognize potential queue jumpers - and what strategy was required to restore natural order.

These included:

- hip and shoulder block

- a strategic elbow

- actually lifting (by the wrist) an arm placed over my shoulder, and politely placing it back where it belonged - with a smile of course.

It helped that I was pretty much bigger than anyone around me.

These actions were generally acknowledged by the jumper with an embarrassed smile, and Duìbùqǐ (excuse me).

I guess the main difference from here was that you (I) were in no danger of being shot. :D

I agree 100% dingdong that those offering assistance should not serve the queue jumpers, but the problem is that this is Thailand and everyone is so non-confrontational that I can't imagine that every happening here. One of my biggest pet peeves is to be conducting private business with a teller, receptionist, information assistant, etc. and someone walks right up and interrupts and starts asking questions as if I am invisible. Or, how about standing in line to have meats or vegetables/fruits weighed at Makro and someone walks right up and places their goods ahead of you. My wife says this is all acceptable in Thailand and nobody makes a big issue of it. In the next breath she says the offender is either uneducated or some big shot who thinks he/she is above everyone else. I get the sense from her that in her heart she knows that this is offensive, but in the interest of being non-confrontational she prefers to say that this kind of behavior is acceptable simply because most people feel helpless to do anything about it. It's easier to let the uneducated remain ignorant and the uppity-ups to be allowed to bully their way around, and everyone else can just grin and bear it and maintain the status quo.
Colossians 2:8-10...See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, which are based on human tradition and the spiritual forces of the world rather than on Christ. For in HIM dwells all the fullness of the GODHEAD bodily; and you are complete in HIM, who is the head of all principality and power.

Leaving Thailand a few years ago and was waiting to go through security. I had 4 Indian women push into the line in front of me. I looked around and saw their 4 husbands laughing about it and heading to join them. I waited until they did then simply walked in front of all of them. I think they could tell I was not impressed and they let it go at that. In Canada people would not even think of trying that and I know I am not in Canada but I have a hard time putting up with this type of b.s.

Whilst waiting in the bank last week about half a dozen Laos people went straight up to the teller asking to change money. Much to my surprise they were told to take a number and wait their turn. They decided to walk off instead of wait.

jjy, that reminds me of an incident at Melbourne Airport 3 or 4 years ago.

I joined a long queue (100+) to check in for a flight back to Thailand on Singapore Airlines. Even as the queue snaked forward, it was filling in rapidly from the rear. As I got closer to the counter (probably 20 in front of me), I noticed a couple of gentlemen from the sub-Continent hanging around a gap in the barrier that would give direct access to the check-in counters.

They bided their time, watching how people went from the front of the queue to approach the next available check-in counter. Then they struck - casually strolling up to an empty counter as the previous people left.

To say the least, I was p1ssed off, so I ducked under a couple of portable queue barriers, and approached the supervisors counter, and told the boss lady what had happened.

She immediately went to the counter where the "gentlemen" were, and instructed the check-in lady to stop processing them. They were then sent to the rear of the queue, which had probably grown by 80 people since they had first arrived.

I was just getting used to a bit of Thai at that stage, but Som Nom Na immediately sprung to mind. :D

Not only SCB. It's also common practice in Kasikorn Central, and, most probably, any other Thai bank.
Any self-appointed 'Hi-so' just doesn't wait. They barge in and the clerk that was attending you will simply ignore you and continue with them.
I've had this happen to me at least three times there so far, but my wife then always implores me to keep quiet and not rock the boat.

Couple of weeks ago I was lining up to get veggies weighed at Tesco, when it was my turn some lady came from behind me, and placed her bag on the scale, the employee proceeded, so I just stepped forward took hers off the scale and placed mine there. Nobody said anything. I just will not stand for such ignorant behavior.

I was in Bangkok Bank at Tang Neesoon, Nadee a couple of days ago to bank some money for the wife. The bank was very busy and only had two clerks. One, a lady was busy with a transaction that was taking a long time. The other clerk was an older man. Several times people walked up to him and interrupted the transaction he was conducting. Each time he sent then to the security guard to get a number and join the queue. The security guard did not hurry himself to give them a number.

In contrast the wife and I were in a down town branch of another bank where she wanted to open a deposit account for her business. As she was being dealt with by the clerk, a Thai lady barged in demanding immediate attention as she was in a hurry. the clerk stopped processing my wife's application and started to deal with the other Thai lady. At which point my wife, who has lived in the UK for several years, stood up, demanded the immediate return of her ID card and told the clerk that she was taking her business to anther bank. Which she promptly did. The predictable part of this story is that neither the clerk nor the Thai lady seemed in the least bit bothered by my wife's actions.

Finally, a bit of praise the the Boys in Brown. Coming round the ring road a few days ago to turn right at the traffic lights at the Kut Chap road, there was a long queue. I had to wait for the traffic lights to go through their full cycle twice before I was able to make the right turn. Several impatient drivers came down the lane to the left of the right turn lane and then made a right turn into the Kut Chap road only to be greeted by one of Thailand's finest handing out a 200 Baht fine for going through a red traffic light.

A very fat middle aged Thai man squeezed in front of me at the ATM at Big-C last week. As I was next in line I already had my ATM card in hand and as he was fumbling to get his card I impolitely elbowed my way in front and inserted my card. I looked back, gave him a big toothy grin and proceeded with my business. After receiving my cash, card and receipt I stood blocking him as I leisurely placed the money in my wallet, inserted my card again, choose another balance check option and again waited leisurely for my receipt and card... turned and give the fat b*stard another toothy grin and walked away.

Gudtymchuc I love it. Wish I was there watching I would have been the bloke laughing loudly with the silent phukuto thought racing in my head.
I'll assume you may be like me and always give that Falang private space distance to the person at the ATM, but with an ever watchful eye for the jumper lurking.

So, if you were the second or third in line to make a right hand turn at a traffic light.....the light changes to green and the guy in front of you proceeds to make his turn (despite not having the right of way).........do you follow in his footsteps as is typical here......or do you wait for an opening in oncoming traffic before making the turn. Come on, folks......'fess up.
