BathRoom Diaries web site

from the Bathroom diaries 8)

Thailand By Train
On a train ride from Bangkok going North (I995 or 1996), there were no bathrooms available on the train. I was reading a newspaper when someone came and asked me to have a section of the paper. I was surprised: as the paper was in Dutch, I was sure he could not read it. Curious what he would do with it, I gave him the sports pages. Which he folded open in the middle of the floor (the wagon was quite crowded), squatted down over it and did his business. Nobody seemed to mind or to be really surprised by this. When all was done, the paper was folded and went out the window!

Lovely. The older members of the village are not adverse to squatting down at the side of the road.

toilet stories, cool. not limited to long ago or supposedly 3rd world. philadelphia to boston, commuter flight, little less then 2 hrs. maybe 8 psgrs and no toilet. you know, you really have to watch what you eat and don't drink that coffee in the morning if hopping on a plane without a toilet. business man, newspaper, but it wasn't thrown out the window when done, and thankfully i only heard about it from the crew and wasn't on the plane.

first time i took the train to nong khai, i don't think there was a holdng tank, remember seeing the stone/track thru toilet.

Must remember not to walk alongside the train tracks any more - or at least wear a big hat if I do

I was on a flight from Rome to New York many years ago when nature called so I ambled to the rear of the plane and whipped open the lavatory door when, to the shock and surprise of both of us, I found a large lady of Italian heritage planted on the tiny commode. Apparently, she didn't understand that one should lock the door of the compartment first. After offering a hurried apology and slamming the door shut I scurried back to the safety of my seat. The enraged signora stormed up the aisle but paused long enough to glare at me as she moved to her seat. You could hear a loud litany of complaining from the lady and her traveling partner.

Life's ups and downs.

It has been known on aircraft for that rather confined area to be used for purposes other than those originally intended when above five thousand two hundred and eighty feet above ground

Nothing has changed

I was on the sleeper Udon-Bkk a few weeks ago and the toilet is literally a hole in the (stainless steel) floor.
2 toilets per carriage - aproximately 26-30 people per carriage - 11 hours

Thats a lot of crap !

Would be ok in the rainy season but what about when it doesn't rain for months. Pity those who construct their tin shack next to the rail line :(

When you gotta go. Worse I think if you are trapped on a plane. At least the train has a hole.

Don't know about the splatter effect but worked on the RR in Udon for over a year unloading RR cars. Will have to say this was outside Udon at Non Soon but can't say we had any problems. Never went loking also.

I would imagine that in a tropical climate there are a multitude of bugs to dispose of deposits on the tracks. :)
