Air freight to Udon?
I am flying into Udon from Bangkok just a couple of days before Songkran, and I want to ship about 45 kg of stuff above my baggage allowances. I'm flying Air Asia, and they charge 160 bath/kg
Somebody suggested air freight, and this sounds great given the condition of the train system just before and after Songkran.
Can anybody relate an experience shipping by air from Bangkok to Udon?
I am interested in knowing whether anybody other than Thai Airways handles airfreight to Udon, which one is the best to use, and how much it might cost.
Thank you in advance for any advice.

At the old airport (Don Muang) there used to be a company near the check in desks whose name escapes me at the moment and they used to state that they will send your air freight for a fraction of the excess baggage charges leveied by the airlines.
Now that the airport situation is so confusing I am unsure whether or even if they moved to the new airport, disappeared altogether or possibly even went back to Don Muang.
I know its not much help for you - I just wanted to let you know that there used to be an alternative before the current chaos.
Have you called the airlines to enquire charges ?
If you are flying Air Asia - aren't they staying at the new airport for the moment ?

Lesh's report is encouraging. 50 Baht per kilo beats the heck out of 160 Baht/kilo. Just within what I would consider a reasonable cost for the stuff I plan to ship.
I have sent enquiry email to Thai Airways and to Air Asia. Not sure who else to contact.
In a separate correspondence today, Air Asia confirmed that they continue to operate out of Suvanabhumi Airport. So, if I end up shipping via Thai Airways, that would have me taking a taxi to Don Maung to ship the freight, then taking another taxi all the way to the other end of Bangkok to get on a plane to fly up to Udon myself. What could be better is if it turned out that an airline flying out of Suvanabhumi can handle the freight.
Any ideas besides Air Aisa (to whom I have already sent email)?

Flight, train, bus ...
At the airport there is a counter for “unaccompanied baggage”. They quote a lot less than Air Asia or any other airline.
Best is (costs wise) using an special express train.
Alternatively all the busses from Bangkok Airport or Mor Chot 2 to Udon Thani do carry some cargo. This is also fast and not really expensive.
Using bus, make sure your cargo is pretty well wrapped so no water can damage it.

Stan, I have considered the train, but I will need to ship this a couple of days before Songkarn. We lived in a room across the street from the Nong Khai train station one Songkran, and I saw that the chaos that takes place on the train system at that time, and don't want to even get close to it again, hence, I am looking at other means of transportation.
Ttom, Thank you for the idea about and the tips concerning buses. I'll poke around for more info on this.
You guys are a real help.

Re: Flight, train, bus ...
If it's any help, we shipped a box from Udon to BKK by bus. It was 150bt for the box. I asked my wife if they calculated by weight or size. She said the guy picked up the box and held it for a couple seconds and told her 150. I figured the weight of the box was about 15kttom wrote:Alternatively all the busses from Bangkok Airport or Mor Chot 2 to Udon Thani do carry some cargo. This is also fast and not really expensive.
We've also used Thai Air Cargo in the past and they quoted us 100bt for 30k.
You never know ...

that is all I have to add.
You see, that's part of the trouble. They charge more or less what they like. But with all ot them, Nok, Air Aisa, or Thai you cannot bank on a bargain price. And if there is not much time between flights, they refuse cargo or sending it with next plane.
Bus companies are pretty reliable. Thai Railway services are also good. And both have very affordable rates. Important is very good wrapping in plastic poils and proper address labels including contact (phone) number - best in Thai.

Take a taxi ....
Quote for yourself:
Air freight, your air ticket, hassle, going from Udon Thani airport to your destination and more will costs you about 6000 TBT if you are lucky.
For about 4500 to 5000 you will find some reliable taxi drivers who will take you to Udon Thani or anywhere nearby. From anywhere in BKK or airport directly to your destination. Hassle free.
Self driving is not that easy to arrange with all your stuff at hand, and surely not advisible after a long flight.
