Moving from BKK to Udon

Post by thegoldpope » September 8, 2007, 8:08 pm

Hi there,

I'm moving from BKK to Udon at the end of the year.
I want to move a small houselot. My relatively cheap furniture and stuff would take about 3 or 4 trips in a pickup, so I'm thinking of hiring a small 6 wheeler truck instead.
There's nothing I couldn't handle lifiting between myself and a friend (which I have at both ends), but I'm thinking that moving this stuff will be more costly than just selling it cheap and writing off the loss.

What would be the best option for moving my stuff.
Are trucks expensive to hire? Should I take one BKK-UT-BKK or UT-BKK-UT?
One moving company quoted me 52,000 Baht! I told them it was outrageous as the goods were only worth about 15-20,000.
Was I wrong about that? Is that a normal price?
Should I just sell up?

I have:
  • a washing machine
    refrigerator
    bed
    sofa-bed
    desk
    office chair
    dresser
    29" TV
    cabinet
    bicycle
and half a dozen boxes of clothes, books and appliances
Any help would be kindly appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

52000 is ridiculous, but you have to expect big prices from Bangkok.I woulld suggest trying to find a large truck from Udon with helpers.I don't know of anything there, but last year my neighbor moved to pattaya fpr about 10,000.When I moved from bangkok to Nong Khai.I used family and a friend with P/U's with side gates and tarps for about 9000 baht!I paid 2 of the soi motorbike taxi guys 200 baht a piece to load up the trucks! My guess is if you look around for truck rental(private),you should stay in the 12-15K range!

See large trucks parked on side just before you get to Tesco's on ring road in Udon. Signs in Thai say trucks are for rent. You're going to have to pay for round trip anyway so might as well try to hire one here and probably get a much lower rate. I agree that 52,000 baht is ridiculous.

Thanks for your help everyone.
So far that's 3:1 in favour of moving.

If you make it a DIY move, you can rent two pick up trucks (Toyota Hilux Vigo 3.0 D Inter cooler) here for 3 days for under 7,000bt. Even with the cost of logistics of moving between BBK & UTH you won't come near to 52,000 (I guestimate about half of that).

The problem with selling is that you will get next to nothing for it, 2nd hand goods are maybe worth 10% of the purchase price wholesale, you might as well write it off.
52,000 :D For a move is really taking the urine, should cost you around 15,000 Thats is what it cost me last year, but that was for a house hold worth, about 5 times of what you listed. If you speak Thai I can put you in touch with my associate in Bangkok, (despite me teaching him for 3 years, he don't speak a word of English :? ) and he can give you a number or two to ring,
These freelance movers are plentiful but its all word of mouth.

I can speak conversational Thai, perhaps well enough to discuss the situation.
I'm keping all my options open and I have a few phone numbers to call now, but one more won't hurt. You can send me a PM, if you like.

Thanks a lot,

Dave

Just a thougth there are lot of trucking companies making the trip from Bangkok to Udon everyday, maybe addding to one of thier loads would save some money.

Beleivce it or not mailing them might be another option. I mailed a 750 Yamaha to Bangkok and I recall that was ubder 1K baht, but it's been awhile. By the way iIdidn't believe this either until I actually did it. Everything went like clock work.

Hey worth a trip to the Post Office all they can do is say no.

Scenes from a post office

Post by thegoldpope » September 9, 2007, 4:35 pm

I can just see it now:

Dave takes a walk down to his local Thailand Post office.

Can I help you?
Yes, I'd like to mail this refrigerator please.
Certainly, sir. If you could just place the item on the scale for weighing...
But of course.
Okay, that comes to 156 kilos. Here are 1877 stamps. Please attach them to the front of the item. Anything else?
>>"Lek, you can go on your coffee break now."<<
>>"Okay, just a second."<<
Sir, I'll just hand you over to my colleague for further service. Here's my card, if you have any future enquiries. Enjoy the rest of your day.
---
My name Pooh. What you want?
I'd like to mail this DVD to my mother in Australia.
Alai wah?
Aus-tra-li-a. You know, jing-joe?
Oh-ho kan-ga-LOO! kan-ga-LOO! ko-wa-LA! kor-kor-DAI. Po-la-BEER
Riiiiight. So, anyway. I'd just like to mail this DVD to my mother there.
OOOOOEEEEEEE. Falang poot alai wah?
Please don't make that sound again. I said "I. Want. Send. DVD. Bai. Mair. Aus-tra-li-ERRR"
No can.
What do you mean,"no can"?
No can.
Look, I want to speak with you manager.
Alai wah?
I poot with boss you.
Mai mee.
Is there someone else I can talk with?
Mai mee.
What about all those people in the back of the office?
Mai mee.

Well, you can all guess what happens next.

I agree with BKKSTAN. The cost of fuel round trip with a trick will be in the range of 4-5000 baht. So I would guess a range of about 15,000 Baht is about right. I shipped furniture I bought in Chiang Mai to Bangkok and was amazed at how inexpensive it was. You might try some of the smaller shipping companies that have their offices in and arround JJ market.

Around JJ Market!
Now there's a good idea.
Wish I'd thought of that.

Boy that was really creative, just out of curiosty did you think you could mail a 750CC Yamaha motorcycle. Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
