Taiwan's EVA to cut flights to Europe, US to offset loss

Jul 13, 2008, 7:40 GMT

Taipei - Taiwan's carrier EVA Airs will cut long-haul flights, including those to Europe and the US, to try to offset loss in the face of skyrocketing fuel prices, airlines officials said Sunday.

'We will have to make flexible adjustments to our long-haul flights after the summer vacation in September to reflect operation costs following deficits in 2007 and the first quarter of this year,' said EVA spokesman Nieh Kuo-wei.

The airline said it suffered a loss of 1.87 billion Taiwan dollars (61.5 million US dollars) last year and registered a deficit of 2.3 billion Taiwan dollars (75.6 million US dollars) in the first quarter of this year.

EVA chairman Chang Yung-fa projected the company's 2008 loss to top 10 billion Taiwan dollars due to fuel costs, which have risen to 60 per cent of the total operation expense of the company.

Under the tentative plan, flights affected would be Amsterdam in Europe, Los Angeles and San Francisco in the US, Auckland in New Zealand and Brisbane in Australia, Nieh said.

Nieh declined to say how many long-haul flights would be cut, saying the airlines will notify air passengers one month in advance for any adjustments made.

The airline halted flights to Paris in October, and to Mumbai earlier this year.

EVA's biggest Taiwanese rival, China Airlines (CAL), said in June it had cut about 150 flights, mostly to the US and Asia, due to soaring fuel costs.

Newly elected CAL chairman Philip Wei said on Thursday the airline would focus on short-haul regional flights, including charter flights to and from China, as part of the new operational strategy.

CAL registered a first-quarter loss of 2.97 billion Taiwan dollars (98 million US dollars).

Yeh, think I agree that flying will be for the wealthy, this trip it's cost me 1,276.00 sterling (approx tb 82,000 ) for my flights alone, 8 months ago I did the trip for 855 sterling (tb 55,000 ), that's for Leeds - London (BMI), London - Bangkok (Eva), Bangkok - Udon (Thai Air). Sure getting expensive. :(

Hi,mally booked a flight Udon to Bangkok Thai air, Bangkok to Manchester Quatar, Manchester to Isle of Man by Flybe last month Total cost 40,020Bhat return, last year in May i did the same trip with Emerates for 35,000B, i think the extra is justified considering the increased cost of fuel, wages etc.. On checking on the internet prices the other way they were about the same. This equates to about 660GBP. From London it would have been 60GBP approx. or about 4,000B cheaper but I would have to stay in London over night, and that would have ciost me more than 60GBP for two nights stay in London, return flight. You prefer to travel direct flight from London to Bangkok prem. rates, so you have to pay the high prices. :(

Yeh, shopped around, but only cheaper flights were with a stop on the way, did this a couple of years ago and spent 32hrs getting home, knackered and needing a rest to get over the vacation ! Now only fly direct LHR - BKK
Should clarify that 1st leg (BMI) is Tourist (only a 1 hr flight & I'll be fresh)
2nd leg (EVA) is premium economy (it's a bloody long haul, 11 hrs out & 12 hrs back )
3rd leg (Thai Air) is business class (need the luggage allowance for all the pressies)
But all this is what I did on the last trip, so the price hike is comparable.
By the way, I tried West East, E Bookers, and several others, Southall travel was the cheapest I could find. Anyone know of anyother means of getting a cheaper flight ?
Oh, and thanks Doug, I intend to enjoy, enjoy, enjoy !

Start shopping around on the Internet about 2 months before you travel, I have managed to find direct flights LHR to BKK around the 440GBP/Return mark ( usually with EVA )
Flying from Thailand is cheaper with EVA than booking in the UK  I had to do an emergency flight back to the UK last month do to my mother being hospitalised and managed to book direct with EVA for about 350GBP one way....to get back?...Tried EVA from the UK and it was about 700GBP one way  but surfed around on the Internet and found a one way to BKK ( with EVA 333GBP  ) Its a bit like Udonmap 8) ... spend a few hours a night on the computer and you'll find out all you want to know! :D

Hi,
Travelled by Eva When they transfered from 747's to there new planes in 2004, bad news, on the first flight out of Heathrow, i think it was the begining of July. The planes were O.K., smelt like a new car, but the service was appalling, I called for a glass of water to take some medication i was on, had to go down to the back of the a/c after 1Hr and ask the staff, there was 4 talking to each other and it took me 2 minutes to get a glass of water. After about 7 hours flying i felt like a beer, this was a laugh, it took half a hour, and this was my first beer. The food was nothing to write home about, very basic. If you compared Emerites which i give 9 out of 10 i would give Eva 2.. Needless to say i will never travel with Eva again. I am not worried that they are cutting flights.
Cheers Doug

Hi,Doug is right,I flew back to the UK with EVA on 15th July and the service was ----.Due to the early morning flight from Udon being ahead of schedule and no traffic between airports in Bangkok,I arrived more than three hours before my flight.People were already waiting to check in but there were only Economy and Laural Class check in counters!.I stood by myself trying to find out where Elite/Evergreen deluxe passengers checked in.I had prebooked my seat but I wanted to dump my bag and shoot through to the departure lounge. No such luck, eventually someone helped me but no apology for the inconvenience of joining the economy check in when I had paid twice the price for my ticket (£1200 return from London). On the flight menus have dissapeared, their answer was " we are a green airline we save the trees" ---- off you save the print bills and thats quite a saving accross all their routes. The service was as Doug described, non existant and I also vowed never to use them again.I am returning in September via Singapore on the A380 for £650 return and I'm looking forward to some excellant service with an old reliable.

Same as Westerby, never had a problem with EVA, currently the cheapest non stop flight, service always good, on one occasion have been fed with booze as and when requested, modern planes with up to date in flight entertainment.

On the other hand have had bad service from Etihad on two occasions and now avoid then when possible.

Thaiairways, nice ladies, old planes, out of date entertainment.

Their In Flight Entertainment (IFE) on their European route 747-400s is still video vintage instead of on demand HDD. The Thais are well known for not investing in through life support from the aircraft manufacturers. In other words, they buy the plane and that's it - no forward thinking on how technology will change over the aircraft's life span.

Hasn't Thai Airways got a 40% stake in Nok Air? That'll explain the Nok jets with Thai Airways livery inside. Despite that, I quite like Nok - cheap and cheerful. :D

wowwwww ,,,realy not understand why so many choose to pay so much for flights. But i guess some are happy to do it for a direct flight and a bit more comfort. Im back to the wife in october and i have booked a return flight in late jan for 556 pounds,, with gulf air, as long as they get me thier in one piece, im happy

Yep, I agree TeddyB,

However you do it, jus one day out of your trip, Arab airlines whoever they are, have new Planes, some times just a two hour wait for your conection in Moozie land. Cheap, Comfortable and good entertainment, as long as you dont tune into the Arab radio stations.

totally agree with teddyb & franco
i always use emirates birmingham to bangkok with 2-3 hour stopover in dubai
i usually pay between £495-£580.
the only time i paid more was when i travelled with china airlines from amsterdam,
this was in august when prices go silly due to northern hemisphere holiday season and i had left it too late to book emirates

What is the food like on an arab plane especially the breakfast, any chance of sheeps eyes on toast or do u have to let then know beforehand that u have special requirements.
They get the option when going on non arab planes so presumably westerners get a choice on their planes?
