Ear pain
Ear pain
My oldest lad started getting some earache about 4 days back. Describes the discomfort as the same as one sometimes gets in a plane cabin when landing. He also mentioned imbalanced hearing and noises when chews. We went to a local clinic who guessed some infection so he got antibiotics and paracetamols. This worked for a couple of days but getting worse where he'll now experience a sharp stab of pain. No ear trauma, blows or swimming involved or reported. His balance is unaffected so inner ear infection is unlikely. Can the ear drum become infected?
Anyway tips for a decent clinic or doctor we can hit up next would be appreciated. The clinic we used last week was closed yesterday for the NY hols.

Suggest you take him to see an ENT Dr. at Bangkok Hospital.

Re: Ear pain
When I was a 11yo kid in the UK I had a boil in the ear canal. Went to the doctor at the local clinic and he couldn't see anything and passed me off with drugs etc. Went back when the pain wouldn't go and no help then but referred me to an ear specialist at a hospital far away. The specialist was able to see the boil deep inside (this was after nearly 2 weeks of me suffering) and prescribed me something or other and said in 99% cases it would happen in my other ear soon after the original ear cleared up in about a week. Sure enough it did, and after 6 weeks of pain in both ears and being off school it cleared from the second ear. Never had that again thank fack.
Re: Ear pain
Ear wax could be an issue.
Re: Ear pain
Needs I think immediate diagnosis from a Specialist ENT Doctor, sooner rather than later.

Re: Ear pain
Thanks for all the responses. More light shone on the whole event. Apparently a few weeks back, the oldest cousin (2 years older) who lives with us had the 'same problem' and went to the same clinic. From what I'm told, his issue was ear wax in that 'something' was removed from his rear. Anyway, it took about a week to solve from start to finish.
My lad didn't have anything removed from his ear but they did take a look before giving him antibiotics and painkillers. The lad does now suggest that maybe he didn't dry his ear properly after a shower (teenagers spend HOURS under the shower head don't they?) but still says he didn't poke it or anything.

Re: Ear pain
Yes, the clinic was closed and Mrs tam made a few phone calls and unless it is a real emergency, the chances of being seen by a specialist at (say) Bangkok Hospital is slim to none TODAY but I am pretty sure they will still charge like a raging bull. Hopefully, he'll tough it out till tomorrow.
I need to find out how this students insurance works. According to Mrs tam, apparently it's half-off for those with proof of being insured by their school.

I was informed by the lady at CVS who removed the wax was to not use cotton q-tips to clean your ear because it actually pushes it further down into the ear drum.
The reason I mentioned ear wax is because I was suffering from the exact thing a few years back. The main one you mentioned was when he chewed, but also had an echo sound when talking.tamada wrote: ↑January 1, 2022, 12:21 pmThanks for all the responses. More light shone on the whole event. Re: Ear pain
Further discussion and it appears that the 'doctor' did 'see something' but reckoned it needed pills first and to come back of the problem persisted? Hard wax plug too deep maybe?Kenr6583 wrote: ↑January 1, 2022, 5:38 pmThe reason I mentioned ear wax is because I was suffering from the exact thing a few years back. So, on the premise that is probably IS ear wax and not some infection, I gave him a few drops of Otex Express that I bought a couple of months back in the UK. After five minutes of 'snapping, crackling and popping' he says "No pain daddy!" So I will give him a regular earplug before he showers tonight to keep his lughole dry then a few more drops of Otex to sleep on and see what happens on the morrow.

strangely I get the hell ear every year around september..jabbing pains every now and then, starts behind the jaw, then the ear, the clue ear / hell wax happens, ..they dredge it out and say its wax, or I must have scratched it..
this time I bought some stuff at the NZ chemist DexOph..( but Forte might have ) eye and ear drops..works a treat to get rid of the pain and the wax...WHAT

Re: Ear pain
an organic and safe way is to put a few drops of olive oil in the ear, plug with some cotton wool. have a sleep and in the morning pull some nasty looking cotton ball out of your ears. oddly olive oil turns ear wax into a fluid

Re: Ear pain
There are dedicated ear wax remover available at the clinics with the correct applicator as part of the bottle.
Re: Ear pain
Although local; old wives remedies can and do work, the bottom line is STILL to see Professional advice and examination as a just in case/ Anything that MAY have entered ( bug/insect etc ) unwittingly or anything else COULD permanently damage this childs ear for the rest of his life .
As a parent I would not want to be responsible for that ..would anyone else eh ??
