Dentist Updates???

Post by luangtom » October 15, 2009, 12:15 pm

Are there any dentist updates? I read on the forum about a few dental clinics in Udon Thani with last year's dates (2008) and am wondering if there are any new clinics or recommendations for a location to get a tooth fixed on an upcoming visit to Udon Thani in November? Any suggestions?

This year I needed a rootcanal treatment and a crown. I've been to Panyavej-inter and to Aek Udon. For each treatment they have a different 'specialist'.

I started at Panyavej-inter. Here I noticed the first problem, 'specialists' are often not available. So one specialist starts explaining procedures about the other specialty. She told me some weird stories about surgery and cutting out a piece of my jaw and other horror stories about procedures that she thought were necessary, with quite a number of treatments. I thanked her and said I wanted to think about it.

Went to Aek Udon. Same story about the 'specialists', different dentists for different procedures. The rootcanal specialist did the rootcanal treatment, without surgery or cutting my jaw. Thanks that went resonably good. Then the problem was that the crown specialist was not available, so the root canal specialist made a temporary crown and did a resonably bad job. To my surprise I was pressured that I needed to make a number of other 'necessary' and expensive treatments. I politely refused and told them that I didn't have time for that at the moment.
I already knew these hospitals are not so cheap as the regular hospitals, but still the bill was a bit of a shock. For Thai standards I think they are quite expensive.

So, I wouldn't recommend either of these two hospitals.

Thanks for this information. I am in need of a simple, single filling. So, I doubt that I will need a "specialist" to handle my case. Thanks, again.

We've done bi-annual cleanings at Rakfan Clinic (042-222-935), Amphoe Rd, the one-way side road between Phosri and Srisuk Rds, udon.map grid k-12. It's just before Maya Restaurant, same side.
Two female dentists, one capable of dental implants. Thorough cleaning 500 baht, single xray 100 baht. Clean, AC, speaks excellent English. We almost always just walk in, no appointment.

Thanks for this information. I am hoping to "just walk-in" to get a simple filling completed.

Parrot, you mention Rafkan clinic and the dentist that does implants. As I do need some implants, I've been looking and asking for recommendations. Do you know if she is qualified and experienced? Earlier this year, a friend took me on a dental tour in the city. we stopped at 3 clinics and they all said "no problem, we can do that" I just want to find someone that is properly trained.
After seeing plastic surgery clinics blossoming all over Bkk, one has to wonder about who is real and who is the hustler.

I am finally getting around to returning to this part of the forum with a report on the dentist found and used.....Rak Fan on Amphoe Road....great experience with excellent pricing. I had the filling replaced for 400-baht. In and out in less than one hour. The wait was within reason and the time in the chair was minimal. She was very proficient and spoke very good English. I do thank Parrot for the information on finding this clinic. Had this work done the third week of November. Chok dee. :D

Elvisman,
Oooops, sorry about not answering your question. I don't know how 'implant qualified' the dentist is at the Rafkan clinic. I spoke with her briefing about her training......which she received through the military.

I did speak with the dentist at the Udom Clinik on Srisuk Rd a year or two ago about implants. Bone grafts, months of waiting between operations.......I'm not ready to submit to the torture. Give me a crown or a wooden tooth instead.

I have posted before on the Dental issues that people also need to review or assess.

Make sure the Dental practice uses best practice sterilising techniques etc

The reason why some places are cheaper, is they take short cuts in this area.

Does ur dentist sterlise the hand set , that holds the drilling pieces ? if not, then you are subject to well documented transmission exposures for Hep B, C and possibly HIV, The blood that is released during the drilling treatment is still foound inside the drilling piece where the gearing and attachment area is.

if they dont sterlise it, they save money as it does cause a replacement issue for the Clinic over a few years

" Hot Water disinfection does not kill all bacteria spores and therefore by definition does not sterlise intruments "

wazza, not doubting the need to sterilize properly, but who among us (perhaps you) could walk into a hospital/clinic and determine if proper sterilizing techniques have been used? I'd be the first to walk out if I saw evidence of chewing gum or betel juice on the doctor's floor, but the way I see it is that if you choose to have your teeth/body cared for in Udon, you're taking an additional risk that you might not be taking back in your home country.
The same goes for eating in vitually any restaurant in Udon, and most definitely at any roadside food stall.
When I read about people dying in the US from eating factory-cleaned spinach or from bacteria infections in hospitals in the US, it makes me wonder how anyone survives in Thailand! Today my daughter and I were in COSTCO, a big supermarket in the US. The bakery department was doing it's evening cleanup. Everything off the floor. Floor sprayed down with disinfectant. Then the floor was scrubbed. The rinsed with hot water. Everyday. It's pretty much standard procedure with food establishments back in the US...subject to very strict health standards. I've never seen evidence of such standards anywhere in Udon....hospitals, clinics, or restaurants. It's a wonder anyone in Udon is alive!

My wife just got a quote from Dr. Wattra, the dentist across from the bus station, for a root canal and 50% gold crown on a rear molar. The root canal was 6K and the crown was 8.5K. But it varies considerably by dentist and the material you choose for the crown.

Does any forumite who has received dental care from Wattra Dental Clinic have an email address for the business, a google search does not throw up anything other than a phone number.

Thanks in advance.
