Electronic cigarette to help you quit smoking

Post by harmonyudon » March 12, 2013, 12:50 pm

I am a heavy smoker myself. Do you believe this??
If you haven't already heard, Electronic cigarettes have grabbed the attention of countless tobacco users worldwide. Everyone from movie stars to your neighbors are using them. But are they really a healthier and cheaper alternative to traditional cigarettes? Can they really help you quit smoking? Creators and product users now say you can enjoy a cheaper, healthier cigarette without the bad smells, second-hand smoke, or cancer causing chemicals. With these huge claims, we decided to uncover the electronic cigarette for our readers.

A few of the benefits claimed from using the electronic cigarette:

No tar, tobacco, carbon monoxide, or ash.
Get the same amount of nicotine as a regular cigarette.
Each cartridge costs less than $2 and is equivalent to an entire pack of cigarettes.
You can save over $1,000 each year.
You won't "smell" like a smoker any longer.
Different flavors are available.
No more second-hand smoke.

I used one for over a year in the States, and they do work. They are not considered 'smoking', so you could use them in offices, which is the primary reason I used them. Are they healthier than cigarettes? More than likely, as long as you control the amount of nicotine you get. It is easy to get WAY more than you need. ;)

The costs shown in your ad are ridiculously high. A cartridge for the one I used was like 30 cents, and if you refilled it, it was like 10 cents, and would easily last as long as a pack of cigarettes. The liquid came in drip bottles so it was easy to refill them, and they had different flavors. I refilled them about 10 times before going to new ones.

The only real downside to these is the nicotine level. As my cardiologist said, nicotine is not benign, and has side effects. If you control the amount you get through self control, they ARE better and safer than cigarettes because they have no burning by-products, as long as the liquid you get is manufactured to high standards. There was a report of the Chinese putting some rather bad chemicals in theirs.

Oh, and the liquid comes in different strengths, so if you wish to use it as a quitting aid, you can step down the strength over time. Two of my friends quit this way.

That being said, I still smoke old fashioned tobacco cigarettes as I could not find the refill liquid or batteries for it after I got to Thailand. ;)

Yes and no.
e-cig's are nicotine replacement, same as nicotine gum, patches, lozenges.
As soon as you run out of your nicotine replacement you'll be reaching for a
regular cigarette. You will still be hooked on nicotine.

I had heard about them. But, I don't think you can find them here. If I could I would give them a try. I have long ago admitted defeat. At least life would be easier for people around me.

This topic has been covered before. I recall someone stating that elect cigs may be found in Tasadet market Nong Khai. I've also seen them here on one occasion, but don't recall where.

I have tried this before (gum, patches etc..), it did not help for me so probably, even when I can
get the electronic one, the result will be the same. Guess, i have to live with it....until i get hospitalized....

(now smoking heavily Kretek cigarettes....)

As I said, the cartridges/refill liquid comes in various strengths. The difference in ecigs vs gum or patches is that they really do mimic smoking. You hold it like a cigarette and puff it like one, so you get the warm and fuzzy that you're 'smoking'. It even has 'smoke' that you can see when you exhale.

Two of my friends totally quit by stepping the strength down from normal like a full strength cigarette to none. Once you reach none, you basically are weaning yourself from the smoking habit of holding and puffing. It took them 6-9 months to totally quit, so it MIGHT work for you if you really wish to quit.

IF you can find them here, or order them and the needed peripherals (charger, batteries, refill liquid). My understanding (which may be wrong) is that they are illegal here.

Be very careful about the electronic cigarette scams – if the number of e-mails that have been caught in the junk filter on my e-mail is representative there are a lot of them about

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in smokers. E-cig's is Nicotine replacement therapy, which has these side effects:

Still looks like a risk for heart disease to me. Also...
In an online Harvard University news story article posted on Monday, January 9, 2012, by Marjorie Dwyer from HarvardScience in the Harvard Gazette, involving researchers in a study from the Harvard School of Public Health and the University of Massachusetts Boston (UMB),: "Nicotine replacement therapies (NRT), specifically nicotine patches and nicotine gum, did not improve smokers' chances of long-term cessation" ... "

“This study shows that using NRT is no more effective in helping people stop smoking cigarettes in the long term than trying to quit on one’s own,”

Same here. I've quit for short periods of time (no more than 6 months) with the gum, patch and a drug called
zyban. On my fourth attempt I just made up my mind that I wasn't going to smoke and suffered through two weeks of constantly craving a cigarette. After that, the cravings became less and less. I think it was about 6 months before the cravings stopped completely. I stayed off cigarettes/nicotine for over three years.

My downfall? One cigarette. You have to remember that once your a non-smoker that there is no such thing as "just one cigarette". That one cigarette tasted like crap, but brought back the nicotine cravings full force. Two days later I bought a pack telling myself "I'll just have one once in a while". Two weeks later I was back on my pack-a-day habit. Such is the power of nicotine addiction.

So here I am a smoker again. I will quit, and I know I can do it. I'm just not looking forward to going through
the withdrawals again. Weaning yourself off nicotine and nicotine replacement therapy didn't work for me. It just
felt like I was prolonging the withdrawals of getting the nicotine out of my body and mind.

scuse me, gotta go have a smoke! 8)

Trying to give up smoking is not exactly a new phenomenon; some from the UK may remember Sheila Hancock (50 years ago in 1963) with her last cigarette:

I've seen people walk away from Herione that could not stop smoking. For some people they can just walk away no problem. Others like me not the case. I went one year no smoking ran three miles a day. My ex wife had finally had enough and bought me a pack

I think it is more addictive to some then others. At one point in my life I was drinking to much, just stopped ( serious stuff drunk for three years) Today when I want a drink I have one no problem at all. Smoking not the same.

Tried all the gadgets but in the end cold turkey worked for me. I think the key is to develop a passionate hatred of the things, or rather a passionate hatred of how hooked you are. The first few days and weeks are tough but you get there if you want to.

As per Jello though, one smoke is all it takes. I did 5 years off them and decided I could have one. Ha. Over a few weeks I wound up back on them full time. I'm off the bloody things again but as the saying goes I will always be a smoker. Just one that doesn't smoke.

The shock-ad's are good to keep young people from starting smoking but does little for someone already hooked, other than make them worry about their health, and then the worry triggers a craving for another cigarette!

IMO a smoker should understand he has a addiction (not a habit) and understand how addiction works on your brain.
