Typhoid shot

Post by tamada » September 20, 2017, 3:53 pm

Just noticed my Typhoid inoculation has expired and will need that for work soon. Is there a clinic, possibly a government one, that will have the right stuff and more importantly, can update my shot record book?

Thanks!
tam

I used AEK years ago for an update of many shots. ( work paid )

Some were ordered in for me and Yellow Fever wasnt available at all and had to go to BKK for that, as its issued by Thai REd Cross and the official vaccination booklet with the registered batch etc

Tam dont forget you can get Typhoid as an oral medication also

I got my Typhoid Shot at Bangkok Hospital this Monday. They did not have the pills but their injectable vaccine is the "dead" virus.

I eventually dropped by Bangkok Hospital and talked my way past the sales staff at reception into getting the shot as a non-registered, walk-in, one-off deal. That took a few minutes but a lot less time than filling in the application form and need for passports, etc.. They still did the (1 minute) vital signs check which cost extra and the doctor's (1 minute) consultation which cost extra so the roughly 700 baht for the shot quickly got up to around 1200 baht. Took about 30 minutes, updated the shot record and on my way.

Totally agree on the health check. But 300 baht a pop is totally milking it (like all other private hospitals). It's like the old business model of hotels charging for internet because once upon a time, the added hardware and support geekery was an extra investment. Now there's hot-spots and free wi-fi up the ying yang, only the big hotel groups and Luddites charge for it. Being a hospital, the equipment and staff is already in place so why charge extra for someone to slip on a cuff, push a button and write down a number?

I wasn't aware that there is an oral option since it's one of them things I get once in a blue moon. A post 2 months earlier commented that it wasn't available then but if I remember before next time, I will ask. Since it wasn't offered and/or isn't available, maybe it's cheaper than the needle option?

All these places, insist on seeing the Doctor first , milk the vital signs etc.... and then the ancillary request is approved.

They wont accept medical referral from another Thai facility....

Tamada,

1200 bht is reasonable for a quick health check and a full course for Typhoid IMO. Jees 50 bucks aussie and you get a minimum 3 yrs coverage. That would only be a mornings work for an offshore guy.

I have had the liquid oral last 3 times for work and fortunately as a requirement of employment I am always reimbursed. Never been offered capsules.
3 yrs cover each time. Work always pays for my top ups. Last work medical was 800 Aussie dollar at BKK Hospital UT. Probably would not get any more if not for work.

You must work for a hard mob if they don't pay for health checks and top up inoculations. Unless you are purely a subcontractor.

I'm self-employed. The costs of staying industry certified is buried in the invoices sent to my happy clients; like the Business Class airfares "+5% handling fee."

Despite being a big, rich oil and gas man, I don't have to be happy with needless milking and bill padding, even if it is 'only' fifty bucks. It's not the cost, it's the nickel and diming for something that they already have to do anyway. Like a bartender charging extra to actually open the bottle of beer.

No worries, thanks for the info on the alternative liquid oral method. Pretty sure it's the preferred option in other lands but then they really do charge like raging bulls for inoculations and the like... same as my invoicing!
