Pok Ding or "make 8, make 9" is a very simple poker game that seems to attract the attention of Thai and Lao females. I a get dragged into the occasional game when visiting a friend's house and was looking for the rules in English.
The basic rules are simple, but there always seems to be a "special" rule that crops up at a key moment. It's all fun and friendly for very small amounts of money in the games I have played.
However, I would appreciate anyone knowing a source of the rules in English referring them to me.

Game has 3 different ways of playing, basic (only 2 card, trying to make 9).....additional card draw.....when pairs beat everything except 8 and 9.
Two Card's very simple:
Everyone gets dealt 2 cards, face cards and 10 are zero.....aces equal 1....and all other cards are face value.
Even money pay-off if you have a higher multiple then the other players (1-9), you get paid double if you have suited
cards and also if you win with pairs that equal a higher # then the other player.
Examples:
Two 4's equal 8, so you collect double from everyone that has a 7 or lower and only lose to someone with a 9.
2d and 5d (suited, equal 7), you collect double from those with 6 or less and pay 8's and 9's.
2 cards with the ability to draw a 3rd card (normally played against a dealer/house):
Pay-off (with drawing the additional card), 3 of a kind and a straight flush pays 5-1..........flush
(total has be be higher then the houses total) / straight pays 3-1.
* If the dealer has 8 or 9 you will normally not get a chance to draw another card, auto win for the dealer.
Not taking a card and sticking with your 2 cards, has the same pay-out as the simple 2 card game.
2 card game where pairs can only get beaten by a higher pair (KK being the top pair) or totals of 8 or 9.
Pairs get paid 2-1, other then that it's the same game as the simple 2 card game.
Hope this helps!!!

Anyways - super replies that are much appreciated. Graham

Mudshark, forgot on hand..............5 and 5 would normally be zero, but in some (key being some games, you'll need to ask prior to playing) 2 card games pocket 5's will beat 7 and lower. In some pair games (again key word being some) a pair of 5's will beat a pair of kings!!!
Concur, small game can be fun........their are 1000 baht games in Udon where you can lose 10K-15K in one hand (playing against 9 players w/ a few of them having double pay-out hands).
Here in the villiage they normally play 20 baht or 100 baht per hand.
