Fishing Spots Around Udon Thani

Post by jackspratt » October 17, 2006, 12:06 pm

For those humorous buggers amongst you - I am talking about the finned variety which live in water

I have searched the forum and found some information back in about February, relating to ponds and lakes close to UT, and some well stocked fishing shops in UT.

What I am also interested in is fishing in the Mekong (say near Nong Khai). Is it feasible, when are the best times, are the fish edible etc etc.

Advice is appreciated.

jack

 I see people fishing in the Mekong, never see them catch anything. There are some pay to fish places where they catch a lot of big fish.I think you have to throw them back.Best to ask at a shop selling fishing gear .There are a few in NK :)

I would be interested to know if there are any places near Udon for catching BIG Catfish ? I know they used to be in the Mekong but sadly are nearly extint ! though some have been re-introduced to try to re-populate ! .

I run Catfishing tours in Spain , you look at some pics here

There are a few commercial catch and release lakes in the Udon area, all with their fair share of Mekong Catfish and relatives, but you wont get anything the size of the Ebro catfish unless you go to some of the more well established places like Bungsamran in Bangkok. As for the wild ones in the river, let me give you an normal example of fishing in Thailand. Even the biggest freshwater fish ever caught (9 foot long, 646 lb Mekong catfish) was chopped into steaks and for sale in the local market at Hat Khrai that evening.

I am a "crafty carper" myself, and have had most success by rearing the specimen sized fish myself. Put them in a lake and they would be on the supper plate within a week.

Hi there Mogster ,
Wow ! that's some cat , and a lot of french fries to go with the steaks !!

Although here in Spain we are supposed to cull the cats when caught this is very rarely done , and certainly not by English anglers , we see it as purely sport where as other Europeans see it as food so I can understang the Thai's taking the fish for the table .

I will be in Udonthani from the 13th 0f may , and will spend a couple of nights in Nong Khai , so I have promised my gf that I will take her fishing at the town fishing lake , dont know what to expect but that's fishing for you .

Here's a pick of a 50 kilo cat I caught last night , 7/may not avery big one but it gave me a hell of a fight ! .

Take care

Marjamlew's Cods were always a bit small and nothing top brag about. Easy to get and throw them back later.

With the expected influx of fresh water the annual salmon run in the soi Jintakam stormwater canal should start very soon.
