Udon Thani FC - The 2013-season

They have Chang as shirt sponsor. There is a small logo on the right hand side of the shirt. A normal, big logo would hide the "giant" shown on the front of the shirt, so I`m guessing that`s why the logo is small.

I don`t know how much players can get paid in Div 2, but I will guess the foreigners (mostly Africans) get at least 30-40 thousand baht per month + accommodation.
In the last couple of seasons there has been many clubs who has struggled to pay their players in a short or longer time, in all divisions. Hopefully Udon`s players will still give 100% to win every game and to get promotion.

But if we look at promotion to Div 1, if UDFC can get there. The club wil have to pay a lot more for players wages, travels/accommodation to/from away games and much more. The tickets might get a little more expensive (from 50 baht now), but they can`t get many more people into the stadium than they do now (if they don`t make bigger stands), so they won`t make a lot more money in Div 1 on ticketsales. Hopefully there will be some good local (or national) sponsors if they get promotion, so they can manage economically in Div 1.

I actually thought Chang was a League sponsor, rather than an individual Club, but if Udon has secured some money out of them, good.
We've seen various people hand over cheques at games this season, but in previous years, I can recall the Ton Koon Hotel and the used to be named Pablo Hospital names on shirts.
It would be nice to think the Club is looking ahead to the possibility of promotion. As you say Svein, if they're struggling to fund the Club now ......... A young man introduced himself to me at the Chaiyaphum away game and suggested he was involved in marketing the Club.
I don't know of any lower league Club owning its' own ground, they all seem to lease the local Administration's stadium. From what I've seen, all of these are very similar in design and limited capacity. In the absence of a generous multi-millionaire and Udon staying put, the cost of any ground improvements would presumably be down to local government.

I don't know who is responsible for the Phosi Rd development and appreciate it's a sports complex rather than just a football ground. I'm not suggesting it's in an ideal situation (parking, traffic) but one COULD have built a neat, full-size pitch, football ground there, seating all sides.

Perhaps Udon might learn something from teams which have gained promotion and see what they've done? In Esan, Korat an example. Roi Et, still in division 2, appear to be trying to go places too.

Udon Thani FC need a chairman with ambition, with a promotions team behind him pushing the club.
A start would be a dedicated club shop, that sell a full range of leisure wear, home and away shirts that fit the fuller figure.
Udon Thani FC sits in a huge catchment area.

AIS is the league sponsor (AIS Regional League).

Ain`t it a full-size pitch at the sports centre? If they make a stand on 2 of the 4 handballpitches (courts? :? ), opposite the current stand, it would be great for UDFC. Why they made it as it is now I have no idea. It`s not in use, and I can`t see other than schools using it in the future if UDFC ain`t moving there.

With all the development, people and companies moving to Udon, I think UDFC can have a good future if managed well. Hopefully they can learn something from other clubs, and develop them selves. Maybe us farangs should learn them some things too... :D

Next game for the out-of-form Udon Thani is at home to Songkhla United in the League Cup this Wednesday. Songkhla is currently number 6 in Premier League, so it won`t be easy for UDFC to go into the quarter finals...

UDFC`s chances of playing in Division 1 next season don`t look too good at the moment. They have lost the last two games, and before that they had two draws. Half way in the season they are 4th in the table, 8 (Roi Et) and 4 (Nong Khai) points behind the two places which qualify for the promotion play-off.

Third spot might also qualify for the play-off. The best 3rd placed team in the two northern leagues will play number 2 from the southern league, for the 12th spot i the play-off, but currently UDFC are 6 points behind the 3rd placed team (Sukhothai) in the other northern region (also 4th to 6th place has more points now than UDFC), so it looks like UDFC has to be amongst top 2 to get to the play-off. Can they do that?
Ubon in 3rd place has already signed seven new players ahead of the 2nd half of the season, and with UDFC`s problems to pay player`s wages, I can`t see them signing better players now.

Next three games are against Roi Et (home), Loei (home) and Ubon (away). I think UDFC need at least 7 points from those 3 games...

A slump in form only to be expected Sven ,,, behind the scenes problems , the day to day running of the club is a shambles and players not being paid knocks another nail into the coffin ........

A buy out , investment and a business plan desperately needed , run as a business not a hobby for elderly Thai gyys that have never kicked a ball .. a proper merchandising outlet would create excellent income /turnover and first n foremost find a good sponsor ... all looks light years away bit i do know a certain expat chap that id looking into it ,, his words im interested only if theres done properly without the coruption and usual rip offs if an expat gets involved .. time will tell but i aint holding my breath .

Udon Thani FC - The 2013-season

I'm not sure that recent results necessarily warrant a slump in form tag. Udon should have beaten Nong Khai on their first-half chances, just needing the ball to run kindly. Mahasarakham away, I don't know, whilst Sisaket competed well and caused Udon more problems than, perhaps, any other team this season, in my view. Any opinions on two crucial incidents? I've absolutely no idea why a Sisaket 'goal' was disallowed - the Udon spilled a cross up in the air and the Sisaket player had a relatively easy task of tapping it in. Offside? - I don't think so. Foul on the 'keeper? No, didn't see that either. The Fair Play ideals went out the window as Sisaket players jostled the referee in protest at his disallowed decision. Then for Udon, Omogba a few metres from goal and a Sisaket player on the ground, seemed certain to score with only to knock it past the 'keeper. Omogba appealed that the defender had scooped the ball to safety with his hand, but the referee waved play on.

A few snippets from a brief conversation I had with a guy, who appeared to hold some position at the Club. He was chatting away to the 'owner' as I stuck my nose it and taking photos pitchside during the game. Again, there was a 'no' to any chance of playing at Phosi Rd, but plan to have new ground in 2 years!!! :-s No further details. The Chang sponsorship is, apparently, a pittance. And our previous thoughts about salaries of Thai and foreign players seem accurate, BUT one player earns 100,000 baht, per month I guess. No reason to doubt the guy's word; indeed, he pointed out the player as he arrived for the game. That seems a ridiculous amount, if true. On income from gate money, he suggested a fair number of free tickets were given out. I can't confirm any of this, but the guy did appear to be in the know.

Udon Thani FC - The 2013-season

I attended the Udon v Sisaket match and was quite impressed with what I saw. It was the first game I'd seen in Udon for about two years due to the timings of my holidays. The crowd was a lot bigger than before and the pitch surface appeared to be much better.

I thought Udon should have got something out of the game and yes Sisaket had a good 'goal' disallowed in the first half but on second half chances and pressure Udon deserved at least a point. Justine's goal was a great strike. I thought the Udon faithful in the left-hand side of the main stand facing the pitch whipped up a good atmosphere.

Udon Thani 1-0 Songkhla United

A great last minute win for UDFC tonight! And they really deserved to beat Thailand`s currently 6th best footballteam.
UDFC are now in the quarter finals of the league cup, which will be played over 2 legs in July.
After what I understand there was more than 3200 people at the game today.
Also, the local government gave UDFC 100.000 baht, so that should help them with thecurrent financial situation.

Other teams in the quarterfinals:
Nakon Rachasima
Chiang Rai Utd or Chonburi (0-0, still playing)
Buriram United or Siam Navy (2-1, still playing)
Rayong FC
Ratchaburi FC
Look Tab Fah or Air Force United (to be played June 15)
PTT Rayong FC or Army United (to be played June 15)

Well done Udon and deserved victory.
This may be a secondary competition with Clubs not using all their top players, but it's proving exciting.
Very good crowd, squashing in everywhere. (Wiki shows the official ground capacity as 2,100, but that might be inaccurate anyway).
Good to see defender Mamady return after injury has kept him out some time.
And didn't the young? keeper play well? Really looked the part showing coolness, confidence and capability. Not to suggest that Udon was under pressure that much, having far more chances than Songkhla.

163400 baht was paid for tickets, which means 3268 people paid to see the game. We came around 10 minutes late and the stand opposite the main stand was almost full at that time. Normally people come late there. We could only find a few "seats" in the first row.

It was 2066 people buying tickets at the Sisaket game on Sunday.

The stadium at Phosi Rd can only hold approx 12-1300 people, so it`s understandable that they won`t play there, as they have 2-3000 people at their games.
Someone mentioned on Udon Map some months ago that there would be a new stadium 3-4 km east of Global House/Udon Delices (at the road between those places), so maybe that`s what they meant. Haven`t heard anything else about this.

If that's the road to Sam Phrao, I haven't been down there for quite a while and not since the establishment of the Rajabaht University campus somewhere that way. Just wondering if there might be a link with that?

Udon Thani FC - The 2013-season

I was holding fire to be certain what was correct Svein, because the fixtures listed below have been on the Thai League Football website since the start of the season. Mind you, there has been the odd slip-up on TLF from time to time.

Strangely, the 2nd half of the season's fixtures are the first half's in reverse. I don't just mean home/away, but e.g whilst Roi Et was Udon's very first game of the season(away), we'll play them again the last game of the season(home). The same pattern means we play Sisaket two weeks running, last week(home), today(away). All teams in the division are the same system e.g Nong Khai away at Ubon last week, meet again today at Nong Khai. I would bet there'll be more than average yellow/red cards with same teams meeting twice within a week. And without any data to back me up, I'll be interested to see if any team can actually win both games.

Incidentally, Surin won yesterday, which pushed Udon done a place in the table, hopefully only temporarily. [-o<

Ooopps. Udon lose again and are in danger of slipping into also-rans, if they don't starting getting results again.

My thinking went out the window, as four teams were able to complete the double over the opposition in a week and unfortunately that included Sisaket's 3-2 win over Udon.

I took in Nong Khai v Ubon, which was a reverse result with with the latter winning 4-2. Bit of a shock for Nong Khai, who conceded more goals in a single game than they had in their previous fifteen!

I noticed former favoured Udon player Ousman appearing for Ubon, perhaps his first game after, I suppose, leaving Loei, unless one can have loaned players in Thailand. He contributed quite a bit - failed to stop the Nong Khai defender scoring with a header from a free kick (admittedly an excellent kick, played a little short, so very difficult to defend against), a flicked-on header which enabled another Ubon forward to run on and score and then taking/scoring the penalty for Ubon's last goal.

UDFC has lost 3 league games in a row now, only 2 points from last five, and in the same period they have beaten Premier League opposition twice (league cup). :?

UDFC are 9 points behind Roi Et now, and will also be behind them when season ends as Roi Et are the best team. Ubon are now in 2nd and has got 7 new players in the last week, and has to be favourites for the 2nd promotion play-off place this season.

UDFC are in 5th place, and the poor run has to end now if they are to have any chances of promotion this season!

Next game are at home to Mahasarakham, who they lost to 2 weeks ago, and then it`s away to 3rd placed Nong Khai, so it`s no easy games yet.

According to UDFC on FB, they got a new player from Khon Kaen a few days ago. Let`s hope he can make a different...
