Thai Boxing Arena?

Post by polehawk » November 5, 2005, 1:15 am

This inquiry went nowhere in old forum but I'll give it another shot:

Muay Thai?

Admin or anyone: where in Udon Thani are the Muay Thai boxing matches held? Unable to find an arena on the map. Times and days would also be helpful. Yeah, I know there are lots of matches on TV but watching in person is much better. Enjoy watching the crowd, the gambling action and the rituals in the ring by the fighters.

I wouldn't mind popping along to see one of these, if there is a ring in the area of course, been ages since my last trip to lumpini ;)

There is a ring at the fitness college as far as I know it's for training, I don't know if they hold matches there are not. Never heard of a match here in Udon, which means absloutley nothing. Never heard of them in Korat either but happened to be bowling there and found that they do have an arena on top of the mall. Must be pretty active they had T.V. cameras at the matches I saw.

If you can figure out some way to contact the mall ther they may have some info on it. For the life of me I don't recall the name of the mall. Korat is only about a four hour drive good roads and could make for a good adventure.

Thanks for the Korat lead, Ray. Might be better to truck on down to Lumpini in BKK. Hard to believe that a town of this size that provides many of the Muay Thai athletes doesn't have an arena. Found a reference in Google for an international boxing arena in Udon (Srimnang Outdoor Arena) from five years ago. Wonder if this arena is being used now for Muay Thai? Anyone know where this arena is on the map? Admin, any info from your sources yet?

Watched an interesting match while visiting Chiang Mai some 30 years ago between a French expat savate practitioner and a Thai boxer in a packed arena. Remember thinking that the only way the Frenchman was going to win was by knockout and, sure enough, that was the result in this 140 lb weight class bout. Both fighters gave creditable performances with few punches being thrown, as I recall, before the Thai's corner threw in the towel.

The big festival in December at Thung Si Muang had some fights last year. Not sure how you could find out what night they would have this year.

I've just received confirmation that there are also some international fights currently taking place in Tha Bo, not sure for how long or who with, but it's happening...

  I do get a "kick" out of this forum. Muay Thai is typed in and ads for Muay Thai shorts, training camps and the like appear automatically.

Thanks for that info, guys. Also good to hear that the Thung Si Muang festival in December is still going on. Attended a few of those many years ago and always had a good time. Anyone in Udon should check that one out.
